LONDON SCOUTS REFIT FLOATING H.Q.
Boys of the 2nd City of London Sea Scout Troop are having a busy Saturday afternoon aboard the ' England ', their new floating headquarters moored at Brewers Quay in the pool of London.
The boat , 110 foot. long and painted blue and white, is being refitted by the boys during the weekends.
The ' England ' has had a chequered career: it was formerly a river pleasure steamer and at one time was the property of Lady Astor; it has also in the past been used as a Gosport ferry steamer, propelled by paddles.
The ' England ' has plenty of sleeping accommodation, and when the refit has been completed sea scouts will be able to spend long weekends aboard to have their training.

NAVY SHORE ESTABLISHMENT USED TO TRAIN MERCHANT SEAMEN
At the Royal Navy's only establishment for Merchant Seamen HMS Gordon which takes the form of rambling buildings on dry land, with a pier, men from 19 to 41 are put under naval discipline given naval uniforms and taugth seamanship before they even board a ship. These are men who, when they registered, expressed preference for the Navy and have been poosted to the merchant Service. Practically all the instruction in this shore establishment for Merchant Seamen such as learning to shoot, splice, steer a ship and read a compass, is carried out on dry land, although the school has a motor launch in which the men have steering practice and learn how to take soundings.
