Bulger, the former boss of the Winter Hill Gang, Boston's Irish mob, had been an FBI informant for decades, feeding information on the rival New England Mafia. He fled after a retired FBI agent told him he was about to be indicted. The character played by Jack Nicholson in Martin Scorsese's The Departed is inspired by Bulger.
