A robot for picking up litter and sorting it for recycling is being developed by researchers.
They hope the smart bins could one day be rolling around the streets.
Two prototypes were tested in New York.
Both could operate in remote control or autonomously.
They are fitted with arms that have curved scoops for hands.
When a piece of trash is detected they are able to come together to pick-ip the offending litter.
A bin which turns 180 degrees has two compartments, one for metal and one for plastics.
Developers Fanjun Bu and Ilan Mandel from the city’s Cornell University, said as well as testing the machines they wanted to study people's interactions with autonomous everyday objects.
