    Police storm Taksim Square
June 11, 2013 - Istanbul, Turkey: Istanbul's Taksim Square. Hundreds of police enter the square early Tuesday morning with water cannons and other police vehicles as the pushed aside the barricades that protesters had built after violent clashes with police started on May 31. Protests in Istanbul began when three people blocked the path of a bulldozer tearing down trees in Gezi Park, the last park in the city's center, on May 27. The protests grew over a redevelopment plan for Taksim Square and the park, which included a mall, promoted by Turkey's Prime Minister's Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Erdogan backed away from the original plan saying on June 7 upon his return from a trip to North Africa that the mall is now not possible also saying a museum may be built instead of a mall.
