‘I’ll have them with hot sauce’: should vegans eat oysters?
Bivalve veganism is built on the philosophy that molluscs such as mussels and oysters feel no pain. But some say the scientific jury is still out.
Alex Karol, a bivalve vegan, eats oysters at Rodneys Oyster Bar in Toronto, Tuesday, September 10, 2024.
Oysters are not to everyone's taste but KarolÕs enthusiasm for the filter-feeding bivalves comes as a surprise - because she is vegan. She is otherwise strict: she does not even consume honey. But a few years back she found she was struggling to get certain nutrients in suitable quantities from plants alone, and someone tipped her off to the idea that you could eat oysters and still be vegan.

Tastier and healthier potato chips and fries could be on the way after a breakthrough in how the vegetable is stored after harvesting.
In a breakthrough for the snack food industry, a team of scientists has discovered a key mechanism behind the darkening and potential health concerns associated with potatoes kept in cold storage.
The snack industry for potatoes is worth billions of dollars worldwide each year.
But farmers can’t grow the crops year-round and snack makers need a constant supply of fresh spuds to meet their demands.
Preserving potatoes in cold storage ensures chip and fry producers have what they need, but the low temperatures also trigger a process called cold-induced sweetening, or CIS, which converts starches to sugars.
Processing tubers loaded with sugars results in darkened fries and chips.
It also generates acrylamide, a compound formed during high-temperature processing, which has been linked to health concerns including an increased cancer risk.
Although there are techniques to reduce sugars in cold-stored potatoes, these add cost and can affect the flavour of the final product.
A US team led by Michigan State University professors Jiming Jiang and David Douches focused on the root of the problem to work toward potatoes that aren’t affected by CIS to begin with.

90210 alum Jennie Garth, 51, puts her issues with arthritis aside as she powers through an intense workout in the San Fernando Valley.

90210 alum Jennie Garth, 51, puts her issues with arthritis aside as she powers through an intense workout in the San Fernando Valley. The mom-of-three recently revealed that she was diagnosed with osteoarthritis ? the most common form of the joint condition ? five years ago and how it prompted her to hire a personal trainer to help power through the pain and stay as active as possible. ñGoing to a doctor or a specialist and getting that diagnosis is key, because from that knowledge, we can do our work,î Jennie confided to People magazine in March, adding: ñIt spurred me into being more physically active and working with a trainer.î 2018 proved to be a tumultuous year for the actress, as her third husband Dave Abrams filed for divorce after three years of marriage citing irreconcilable differences. The pair separated but got back together ten months later and have remained married to date. For her gym outing on May 24, 2023 Jennie went makeup free and wore black sweats, a gray tank top and Nike Air Max 270 trainers. On her exit from the gym she stopped to hug an admiring fan and pose for selfies. JennieÍs trainer walked her to the car and the pair chatted for a while before she made her way home.
