New aerial images of ScientologyÍs sprawling Gold Base, in a remote part of stifling hot desert in CaliforniaÍs Riverside County, show a mysterious bunker at the rear of the property, with a staircase leading underground. The cavern is close to a stunning mansion on the hill, which overlooks the L. Ron Hubbard-founded kingdom that also features a swimming pool with a faux ship deck, a church, tennis courts, a soccer field, a golf course, and another mammoth home believed to be lived in by Scientology chief David Miscavige. It has been speculated that reclusive actor Tom Cruise - widely accepted as the religionÍs second-in-command - lives at the compound part time. Despite Gold BaseÍs lush lakes, rose gardens and manicured lawns, it is positioned in the midst of martian-esque desert terrain, surrounded by dairy farmers who operate in blistering temperatures that often soar above 100F in summer. Also included in the contact sheet is a portion of the churchÍs paperwork with the Riverside County planning department - which does not include any applications to dig into the ground to create a bunker.
