Sir Terry Pratchett with the sword he forged from his own iron ore, near Salisbury, Wiltshire, Britain - 18 Sep 2010
It may sound like something from one of his books but a sword made out of a meteorite is no fantasy for Terry Pratchett. The fantasy writer, creator of the phenomenally successful Discworld series, decided that he needed a suitable sword after being knighted by the Queen last year. Wanting to make the sword wholly his own the newly titled 'Sir' set out to collect, smelt and mould his very own weapon. First of all he dug up his own iron ore which he then smelted in the grounds of his house, using a makeshift kiln fuelled by sheep manure and constructed from clay and hay. According to the 62-year-old author, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease, he also threw in several pieces of meteorites, or "thunderbolt iron". What followed was days of hammering the metal into bars that Sir Terry took to the local blacksmith to be shaped it into his very own heavenly blade, which was finished off with silverwork.

Men and boys training in a traditional gym for the Iranian martial art of Zurkhaneh, which is Persian for 'House of Power'. Zurkhaneh consists of seven main exercises practiced using special tools shaped after ancient weapons such as the sword, mace, shield and bow. The practice dates back more than 800 years, when Persia was invaded by the Mongols. A resistance movment formed, with men gathering in secret groups to train for the fight against the Mongol hordes.

These haunting photographs show the remnants of the once all-powerful Soviet empire.

They are the work of Eric Lusito, who spent six years travelling throughout the former Soviet world from East Germany to Mongolia, from Poland to Kazakhstan to seek out remains of the military installations that embodied the ambition and the might of the USSR.

Describing himself as working like an archaeologist, the French photographer says his project "Traces of the Soviet Empire" is a photographic record of the land and architecture - haunted by the symbols and history of a once powerful Empire.

The on-going project takes the form of three series: exteriors, interiors, and found photographs "images from another time, another space and another world".

What he found was colourful propaganda wall art, faded frescos of Lenin, discarded gas masks, and huge monuments, including those in the shapes of a soldier and a sword.

Princess Anne came armed with a fearsome Scimitar - a middle eastern fighting sword - to the Whatley Manor International Horse trials at Gatcombe today. But spectators need not have worried, the Princess was wielding the shining blade to cut a 25th anniversary cake celebrating the Middlebridge Scimitar - the car not the knife. Princess Anne has owned and driven 8 Scimitars over the years and still owns and drives her latest model ( Reg 1420H) which was on display with more than thirty other lovingly restored examples.
