'Turanor PlanetSolar,' the world's largest solar powered yacht, Brisbane, Australia - 29 May 2011
The world's largest solar boat, Turanor PlanetSolar arrived on its first Australian stopover at Riverside Centre Pontoon, Brisbane, part of its quest to become the first fully solar-powered vessel to circumnavigate around the world. In its record breaking attempt, Turanor PlanetSolar will cover approximately 27,000 nautical miles in its effort to prove that current renewable energy technologies are reliable and effective and to demonstrate the potential of environmentally responsible mobility concepts.
The multi-hull catamaran measures 31 metres by 15 metres and has a solar photovoltaic surface area of over 537 square meters, hosting 38,000 high-efficiency solar cells, making it the biggest solar-powered ship in the world. Founded by 'Turanor' co-skipper Raphael Domjan, Planet Solar will use the expedition to prove that current renewable energy technologies are reliable and effective, and to advance scientific research into the production and storage of solar energy. After embarking from Monaco on September 27 2010, the 'Turanor' has already broken two records: fastest crossing of the Atlantic Ocean by solar boat and longest distance ever covered by a solar electric vehicle.

An adult male weighs around 400?680 kg (880?1,500 lb) while an adult female is about half that size. The IUCN now lists global warming as the most significant threat to the polar bear, primarily because the melting of its sea ice habitat reduces its ability to find sufficient food. The IUCN states, If climatic trends continue polar bears may become extirpated from most of their range within 100 years. On May 14, 2008, the United States Department of the Interior listed the polar bear as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act.

Wandering albatross (Diomedea exulans) on the wing at sunset approaching South Georgia Island, Southern Atlantic Ocean. The Wandering Albatross has the largest wingspan of any living bird, with the average wingspan being 3.1 metres (10.2 ft). The longest-winged examples verified have been about 3.7 m (12 ft), but probably erroneous reports of as much as 5.3 m (17.5 ft) are known. As a result of its wingspan, it is capable of remaining in the air without beating its wings for several hours at a time (travelling 22 metres for every meter of drop). The length of the body is about 1.35 m (4.4 ft) with females being slightly smaller than males, and they weigh typically from 6 to 12 kg (13-26 lb). Immature birds have been recorded weighing as much as 16.1 kg (35 lb) during their first flights. The plumage varies with age, but adults have white bodies with black and white wings. Males have whiter wings than females with just the tips and trailing edges of the wings black. They feed on squid, small fish and on animal refuse that floats on the sea, eating to such excess at times that they are unable to fly and rest helplessly on the water.

Oz the snow monkey learns to swim, Central Park Zoo, New York, America - 02 May 2010
SNOW MONKEY OZ MAKES A SPLASH
Ever since he was born 11 months ago Oz the snow monkey has made a real splash at Central Park Zoo in New York.
And today was no different as the youngster was taught how to swim by mum Hannah and the rest of the family.
However, little Oz wasn't too sure of the wet stuff to begin with and needed a little gentle persuasion from mum to join in the watery fun.
The youngster appeared less than impressed when mum Hannah first slipped off the branch they were sitting on and into the water.
Apparently not willing to take the plunge, Oz didn't seem too keen to join her - even when she tugged gently on his arm.
But after some persuasion, and like any cautious youngster, Oz descended into the water using a handy log - slowly and carefully submerging one part of his body at a time.
Eventually, fully submerged with just his head showing above water, Oz screwed up his courage and let go of the log he was clinging to.
With the worst part over and done with, the happy youngster then spent some time monkey paddling around the pool.
In fact, as his confidence grew the mischievous youngster even started jumping in and out of the water, apparently seeing just how big a splash he could make.
Once the fun and games were over it was then time to stretch out on a nearby rock to dry off in the sun.
The brave youngster also got a congratulatory cuddle from mum and a tasty treat for his efforts.
Snow monkeys are no strangers to water as, in their natural habitat in the mountains of Japan, they survive the harsh winter temperatures by bathing in naturally occurring volcanic hot springs.

THE SQUEALLY TINY PIGS THAT ARE A BIG HIT
Tiny pigs the size of tea cups are the latest pet craze sweeping across Britain.
The must-have micro pigs have become so popular they are almost impossible to get hold of in the UK and sell for up to GBP 700 each.
The adorable piggies, which grow to just 14 inches tall, have even being snapped up by celebrities, including Harry Potter actor Rupert Grint, who plays Ron Weasley.
"Demand for micro pigs is soaring and we are inundated with enquiries every day," said Jane Croft, 42, who has given up everything to breed them full time.
"It's amazing how popular they have suddenly become and just how many people want pigs as pets."
Micro pigs are much smaller than a standard farm pig and weigh 9oz, about the size of a tea cup when they are born.
At two years old they are fully grown and weigh in around 40-65 pounds and are around knee height at 12-16 inches tall.
They can live for up to 18 years, but make popular pets as they are low maintenance, quiet and surprisingly clean.
"Micro pigs make fantastic pets as they are very low maintenance. You don't have to take them for walks and they have very few health issues," said Jane.
"They don't make much noise, they are easy to toilet train and once they have bonded with you they are very loving.
"They are actually very clean and never mess in their bedding and are just so adorable.
"They are also highly intelligent and are the fourth most intelligent species after man, monkey and dolphin.
"They really are the perfect pets, I don't know why people haven't thought of them before."
Micro pigs, which grow no bigger than a Labrador, are also good alternative pets for people with alle...

Eunice Shriver Dies At 88
EUNICE SHRIVER DIES AT 88
Eunice Shriver, sister of JFK, has died at the age of 88.
The mother of Maria Shriver Schwarzenegger had been ill for some time and had been admitted to Cape Cod Hospital in Massachusetts after suffering several strokes.
Sister to Senator Edward 'Ted' Kennedy, Eunice was known for her extensive work with the disabled, having founded a world movement for rights of the mentally handicapped in 1962, which would eventually develop into the Special Olympics.
All this was inspired by the predicament of her older sister Rosemary Kennedy, who was left severely mentally disabled after a prefrontal lobotomy intended to correct behavioural problems cut away vital parts of her brain.
Eunice Shriver, whose husband Sargent organized the US Peace Corps under his brother-in-law's administration, started a special camp at her home in suburban Maryland outside Washington DC in 1962.
The intention was to "explore" the capabilities of "adults with intellectual disabilities" for sports and physical activities, according to the Special Olympics' website.
In 1968, just weeks after the assassination of another brother, Robert, who was running for the Democratic presidential nomination, Shriver launched the first International Special Olympics Summer Games.
They attracted 1,000 individuals with intellectual disabilities from 26 US states and Canada to compete in track and field and swimming.
By 2008, the Special Olympics celebrated its 40th anniversary, drawing nearly 3 million athletes from more than 180 countries to the event that followed the regular Olympic Games in Beijing.
Shriver's influence on her brother, the former president, is credited with the push in 1963 to pass the first law in US history to protect and support the rights of the mentally di...
