The Oasis of the Seas, the world's largest cruise ship, is officially unveiled, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, America - 20 Nov 2009
WORLD'S LARGEST GBP 800M CRUISE SHIP UNVEILED
The world's largest and most expensive cruise liner has officially been unveiled to the public.
The 1,200-foot (360-metre) Oasis of the Seas was commissioned by Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and comes with a GBP 800 million price tag.
Nearly six years in the making, the ship has 16 passenger decks, putting the highest 65 metres above the waterline.
At 1,187 feet (360 metres) long and 208 feet (65 metres) wide, it can hold 6,296 guests in total, along with 2,165 crew.
It boasts 2,706 guest staterooms, of which 1,956 have a balcony overlooking either the sea, Central Park or the Boardwalk.
The mammoth vessel is broken down in several different areas: Central Park, the Boardwalk, Pool & Sports Zone, Royal Promenade, Vitality at Sea Spa & Fitness, Entertainment Place and the Youth Zone.
Bringing the outdoors indoors, Central Park is the first ever living park at sea.
Located at the centre of the ship, it is open to the sky above and features 12,175 plants including 93 different plant varieties, 62 vine plants and 56 trees and bamboo.
The Boardwalk area has been inspired by traditional seaside piers and stretches for over 255 feet (77 metres).
As its centrepiece its boasts a carousel featuring 18 wooden figures, such as zebras, giraffes, lions and horses, which each took over six weeks to make.
The Boardwalk is also home to numerous cafes, shops and carnival games and, at the very end, the AquaTheater - an amphitheatre style pool and performance area.
The AquaTheater pool is the largest and deepest at sea; with seating for 735 people, it will play host to professional diving and theatrical performances.
Meanwhile, the Royal Promenad...

Women only trains introduced due to safety concerns, New Delhi, India - 02 Nov 2009

Women onboard one of the female only trains, known as 'Ladies Specials'
Women only trains introduced due to safety concerns, New Delhi, India - 02 Nov 2009
INDIAN WOMEN APPLAUD FEMALE ONLY TRAINS
With millions of Indian women pouring into the workforce over the past decade many have found themselves facing numerous obstacles.
In such a tradition-bound, male dominated culture, discrimination is rife and even the basic task of getting to work can leave a woman exposed.
Women travelling in crowded mixed sex carriages often face abuse and worse, a practice known as 'Eve teasing'.
Due to this the Indian railroad initially introduced special females only carriages, meaning that at least two carriages per train were reserved solely for use by women.
However, with overcrowding such a problem on the rail network men would often simply break into these compartments.
In response authorities began a drive called "Bhairavi" - intended to penalise men travelling in ladies-only coaches - but it didn't work.
So, with the problems of taunting and harassment continuing to persist, in recent months the government has decided to simply remove men altogether from certain trains.
In a pilot program, eight new commuter trains exclusively for female passengers have been introduced in India's four largest cities.
Known as 'Ladies Specials', these services have been introduced in Delhi, Mumbai (Bombay), Calcutta and Madras (Chennai) and have proven to be a big hit.
They can easily be recognised thanks to their bright colours - the front of the engine is painted blue and red and the carriages are bright yellow - and come equipped with clean, padded benches and electric fans.
Security onboard is tight with both male and female officers from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) patrolling the aisles. The only other ad...

Here's an idea that will never take off - a hostel aboard a JUMBO JET.
The world's first built guesthouse onboard a real Boeing 747-200 has touched down at Stockholm Arlanda Airport.
Guests (or is that passengers?) have the chance to sleep in the cockpit of the aircraft - which comes complete with throttle controls.
You can even wake up to the sight of real planes taxiing on the airport's runways through the windows.
The staff also dress as cabin crew - with many of them actually former air hosts and hostesses.
The plane has a reception and lounge area, complete with candlelit tables and a retro company logo, and a choice of 25 rooms.
Prices ranging from GBP 29 for a dorm bed to GBP 275 for the cockpit double, which includes private bathroom and breakfast, meaning this overnighter offers both budget flight and long haul-equivalent prices.
"It's just fantastic and unbelievably exciting to finally be able to show something so unique and special for the rest of the world," says Gisela Olsson, Site Manager at the Jumbo Hostel.
Originally delivered to Singapore Airlines in 1976, the jet also spent time in Cathay and Pan Am fleets.
But now it is grounded indefinitely could be there be any better way to join the TEN METRE-high club

Prince Philip onboard the QE2 ahead of its farewell voyage, Southampton, Britain - 11 Nov 2008
The QE2 cruiseliner left today (11 November) for its swansong jounrey - headed to Dubai to become a luxury floating hotel. The vessel left its home port of Southampton for the final time under a cascade of fireworks and with 'Rule Britannia' playing from its decks. The vessel's departure was the conclusion of a day of ceremony to bid farewell to the historic liner. And the Duke of Edinburgh was on hand to lead these farewells. However, the QE2 very nearly didn't make it into port in the first place; the ship sparked drama after it briefly ran aground early this morning. After being freed by tugs it eventually made it into port 15 minutes behind schedule. As part of the farewell celebrations Prince Philip attended various on-board ceremonies. This included a two-minute silence to mark the 90th anniversary of the Armistice. As the clock struck 11am, a million poppies were dropped from a Tiger Moth aircraft over the vessel.

A hidden treasure trove of photographs of the Victorian Anglo-Zulu War have been discovered in Dorset, Britain - 07 Nov 2008
A hidden treasure trove of photographs chronicling the British Empire's battle with the Zulus of southern Africa has come to light. The 130-year-old images chart the British forces attempts to spread the empire through Africa during the Victorian era. The previously unseen pictures were compiled and more than likely taken by naval surgeon Sir Henry Norbury KCB while he was serving on HMS Active. His pictures include those of female witch doctors, Zulu warriors, British camps, ships, and landscapes. There are also shots of prominent royal Zulus as well as some images from the Anglo-Zulu war in 1879. Stored in an album given to him by his wife for his birthday in 1868, the pictures have been in the same Dorset-based family ever since. The 200 photographs will go under the hammer at George Kidner Auctions in Lymingtonon on November 20th, with the lot expected to fetch between GBP 1,500 and GBP 2,000.

PRINCE HARRY VISITS MANDELA'S CELL
Prince Harry has visited the cell that housed Nelson Mandela for 18 years as part of a visit to Robben Island.
The Prince and other members of his regiment are currently spending some time in Cape Town at the end of their charity endeavours in the tiny African country of Lesotho.
Harry and his comrades took a ferry from Cape Town to the ex-leper colony of Robben Island to see the 7ft by 8ft room, containing a straw bed, worn blankets and tiny window, where Mandela was imprisoned.
The 3¿-hour trip included a talk on brutal jail life by an ex-political prisoner and was, according to Harry, a "humbling" experience.
The visit also included a glimpse at the quarries where anti-apartheid leader Mandela did hard labour after being jailed in 1964.
Mandela, now 90, was moved to a mainland jail in 1982 and freed in 1990.

Previously Unseen Pictures Of Prince William With The Royal Navy
Previously unseen photographs of Prince William training with the Royal Navy in 2008 have been released.
The images show William visiting Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton, where he met with members from two of the Navy's principal squadrons.
One of these was 848 Naval Air Squadron, which is normally responsible for training the crews that support Royal Marines in operational environments.
Temporarily adopting the callsign 'Avenger 914', William took to the controls of a Royal Navy Mk IV Sea King and lifted off in company with other squadron aircraft.
The images also show William during his stint onboard the HMS Iron Duke while it operated in a number of roles in the North Atlantic.
Primarily, it assisted the Caribbean islands during the core hurricane season and worked closely with the United States Coast Guard forces in the hunt for drug smugglers across the Caribbean region.
During his time onboard the vessel William was involved in planning and surveillance for an operation that saw cocaine valued at GBP 40m seized from a speedboat.
The prince, or Sub Lt Wales as he was known on board, was part of the Lynx helicopter crew that observed the drugs boat.
In other images William is seen wearing the Order of the Garter with his Royal Naval dress uniform onboard the patrol vessel HMS Trumpeter.
Meanwhile, he is also photographed at the Commando Training Centre at Lympstone, Devon during a short introduction into the activities of the Royal Marines.
As part of this he took to the air in a Royal Navy Airborne Surveillance and Area Control (ASaC) Sea King - taking to the controls to land the aircraft on Woodbury Common, where Royal Marine recruits receive much of their training.
