Only charter boats with permits are allowed to take people to scuba dive and snorkel with seals at Monatgue Island. The boats leave from Narooma. NSW Parks and Wildlife conduct the tours on the island.

The island became a nature reserve in 1990. A regeneration program has successfully seen the removal of all vertebrate pests. Weed control programs are ongoing.

Mount Gulaga (also known as Mount Dromedary) - which rises above the village of Central Tilba - is shrouded by cloud. A Yuin Dreamtime story connects Barunguba to Gulaga. The mountain and Montague Island are connected geologically via a submerged rock shelf.

Seals generally stay underwater for two to four minutes when they are foraging and diving for food, but have been recorded staying under for up to 10 minutes.

Male Australian fur seals can weigh up to 360kg. Both Australian and New Zealand fur seals consume a range of fish species and cephalopods such as squid, octopus and cuttlefish.

A healthy population of about 500 New Zealand and Australian fur seals live and breed year-round on Montague Island on the NSW south coast.

Australian fur seals often float in the water with one flipper in the air - this is their way of cooling down.

Despite their size, seals are surprisingly agile both in water and on land. For safety, people should always keep their distance: 40 metres for adult animals hauled out on land, and 80 metres for pups whether they are in the water or on land.
