Refugees rescued at sea off Crete
October 19, 2025 - Palaiochora, Southern Crete, Greece: Shipwrecked boats that have brought refugees in recent years. 76 refugees arrived from Libya after three harrowing days at sea in a wooden boat. They were rescued by the coast guard during the night and transferred to another boat to reach a small port of Paleochora - so the tourists won't see them- where they received food and water. Among them: 13 men from Bangladesh, 22 from Sudan—including a 17-year-old mother with her baby—37 Egyptian men, and 4 from Pakistan. They wait for the bus to Souda, and the ferry to Piraeus, their destination in Greece where all want to work and support their families back home. Crete is facing a migration emergency. According to the UN Refugee Agency, some 12,000 migrants have arrived from North Africa this year—on an island of just over 600,000 people. That’s a 300% increase from last year, with Crete now hosting a third of all irregular arrivals in Greece. Overcrowded, underfunded facilities and slow relocations to mainland centers are leaving authorities struggling to cope. (Maro Kouri/Polaris) (FOTO:DUKAS/POLARIS)

October 19, 2025 - Palaiochora, Southern Crete, Greece: A 17-year old mother from Sudan with her baby named Arum and her husband arrived together with 74 refugees from Libya after three harrowing days at sea in a wooden boat. They were rescued by the coast guard during the night and transferred to another boat to reach a small port of Paleochora - so the tourists won't see them- where they received food and water. Among them: 13 men from Bangladesh, 22 from Sudan—including one more woman, 37 Egyptian men, and 4 from Pakistan.
