The picture shows Steel Star by Yuriy Stolypin, 30, and was taken in Saint-Petersburg, Lakhta. They said: "For a very long time I have been hatching the idea of this photo. I wanted to take a photo of the tallest skyscraper in Europe, shrouded in morning fog. But for this shot I had to wait a long time for all the weather conditions to coincide. I regularly monitored the weather and looked into the city cameras to make sure that all shooting conditions were favourable for the intended shot, since I live very far from the shooting location. When everything coincided, early in the morning I called a taxi, arrived at the skyscraper, raised the drone as high as possible and took this picture."The 26 finalists for this year's Weather Photographer of the Year have been announced and the public are being invited to vote for their favourite. The Royal Meteorological Society (RMetS), which celebrates its 170th birthday this year, in association with AccuWeather, has put the shortlisted pictures on their website and people can visit photocrowd.com/wpotyvote to vote until September 25.The popular competition, which is now in its fifth year, has attracted entries from around the world.

The picture shows Frosty Bison by Laura Heiden, age 55, from Grayslake, USA. It was taken in Yellowstone, Wyoming. She said: "We were touring the west side of the Park. It was a very cold sunrise, the coldest of the week so far. It was near zero degrees Fahrenheit. We came around the corner in our snow coach and saw this magnificent bison just sauntering down the road as if they owned the Park and they do! Keeping the required distance from him/her we hopped out, grabbed some photos, and quickly got back in the vehicle and watched as she/he walked about five feet right past us. It was as if we were not even there. It certainly added to the ghost-like event."The 26 finalists for this year's Weather Photographer of the Year have been announced and the public are being invited to vote for their favourite.

They said: "I live in Arizona but was visiting family members in El Paso, Texas that week. Very early on the morning of November 6th I woke up and felt an urge to check my radar app on my phone. I discovered a discrete thunderstorm cell was moving north from Mexico towards the U.S. border near downtown El Paso. I hurriedly gathered my camera gear and drove to an overlook that gave me a perfect vista of the storm and of the downtown El Paso skyline. It's always been a "dream shot" of mine to capture lightning over this desert city landscape."The 26 finalists for this year's Weather Photographer of the Year have been announced and the public are being invited to vote for their favourite.

He said: ÒI tried many times to catch a good lightning strike behind this rock called Sa Foradada, but every time I tried, the conditions were not so good. I didn't have the moon on the sky to illuminate the scene, or the lightning was too far away. This night I knew that a big storm was approaching Mallorca and all the conditions were perfect. I don't remember if the moon was full, but I remember that it was very big. This was perfect, because the moon was going to illuminate all the land and the sea and gives more colour to the scene. I chose my composition, and I shot many pictures until the storm fell on me. This is one of the pictures I took that night in Sa Foradada. To see the storm and the lightning that night was something amazing.ÓThe 26 finalists for this yearÕs Weather Photographer of the Year have been announced and the public are being invited to vote for their favourite. A photographer has captured a series of striking images of Cuba's Wi-Fi 'Revolution'.

Photographer Valerio Berdini captured a series of images that show Cuban faces illuminated by mobile phone light, as many browse the internet on their mobile phone devices for the first time.

In June 2015 Cuban citizens gained access to Wi-Fi for the first time when Cuban government-owned telecommunication company, ETECSA, began installing 35 Wi-Fi hotspots in the parks of the main cities.

Until that date the web in Cuba was an affair limited to the guests of few luxury hotels and some official state offices.

These stunning images show humpback whales feeding last week.

Wildlife photographer Roy Mangersnes travelled to Tromsø in Norway to capture the spectacle.

His pictures show massive humpback whales plunging out of the water, fish flying, while they feed on the huge congregation of herring in these fjords during the winter months.

Also pictured are humpback whales resting on the surface of the freezing cold water outside, tired from hunting herring in the deep.

He explains: "As the sun is disappearing from Northern Norway and snow is covering the ground, hundreds of whales are entering the narrow fjords. Under the surface, millions of herring are luring in commercial fishers, whales, eagles and gulls alike."

Eye-Opening Portraits Explore The Lives Of Third Gender People In Bangladesh
Shahria Sharmin's poignant photo series Call Me Heena highlights the struggles of the transgender minority in Bangladesh, also known as the Hijras.

The term Hijra is often given to those of the 'third' or unknown gender in Bangladesh, and also parts of India and Pakistan.

While most of Western society is very accepting towards the transgender community, males who choose to live as females face are shunned from society in most of Bangladesh, India and Pakistan.

"In Bangladesh Hijras hardly get an opportunity to have a normal life. They do not have any school to study, no temple to pray in, no government and private organizations would want to see them in their employee list. They have no access to legal system nor do even health service providers welcome them."

Shahria is a 42-year-old Bangladeshi photographer who is currently studying in London.

The photographer decided to take time to get to know the community who are outcast by so many.

"I, like almost everyone else in my society, was raised to see them as less than human. Their habits, way of life, and even their looks marked them as apart, different and deviant.

"Then I met Heena and she made me see how wrong I was. She opened her life to me, made me a part of her world and helped me to see beyond the word Hijra. She made me understand her, and others who live in her community, as the mothers, daughters, friends and lovers that they actually are."

Shahria began pursuing photography at the age of 38 and has worked as a freelance documentary photographer ever since.

After recognising that photography would enable her to tell stories and explore humanity she quickly ...

    Ultraviolet Undersea Life
A new collection of photographs capture the beauty of underwater life.

Award-winning photographer Louise Murray has spent the majority of her years travelling the globe documenting awesome scenery and wildlife from every country she has visited.

During that time she has often dived underwater to photograph marine creatures amongst the coral reef.

Her latest collection was captured while diving in the dark waters of Tondoba Bay in the Red Sea of Egypt.

The fluorescent images occur when near an ultraviolet torch.

Highlights include a giant clam that appears dull under natural light but glows bright red under the blue hue; a pipefish hunting at night glows orange and camouflaged fish made visible by the ultraviolet torch reveal their florescent green pigment making them known to their prey.

In comparison to the muted browns, golds, pinks and blues of a coral reef during the daytime "it looks like Oxford Street at Christmas," says Louise.

The wildlife photographer uses a powerful blue light to stimulate photosensitive pigments in the marine life, which then emit fluorescent colours.

Louise explains: "Almost all these photographs were shot after dark as the sunlight masks the colours.

"The stronger the light the better the results, I have to filter my camera and eyes with a yellow mask so the true colours are revealed.

"It can be very exciting when I find a new kind of fish or crab that glows orange, yellow or red, as they are extremely rare."

Dr. Robert Hutchings Goddard (1882-1945). Dr. Goddard has been recognized as the father of American rocketry and as one of the pioneers in the theoretical exploration of space. Robert Hutchings Goddard, born in Worcester, Massachusetts, on October 5, 1882, was theoretical scientist as well as a practical engineer. His dream was the conquest of the upper atmosphere and ultimately space through the use of rocket propulsion. Dr. Goddard died in 1945, but was probably as responsible for the dawning of the Space Age as the Wrights were for the beginning of the Air Age. Yet his work attracted little serious attention during his lifetime.

Dr. Robert H. Goddard at a blackboard at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1924. Goddard began teaching physics in 1914 at Clark and in 1923 was named the Director of the Physical Laboratory. In 1920 the Smithsonian Institution published his seminal paper A Method for Reaching Extreme Altitudes where he asserted that rockets could be used to send payloads to the Moon. Declaring the absurdity of rockets ever reaching the Moon, the press mocked Goddard and his paper, calling him "Moon Man." To avoid further scrutiny Goddard eventually moved to New Mexico where he could conduct his research in private.
