FEATURE - ESA-Astronaut macht atemberaubende Aufnahmen von Polarlichtern

This is a jaw-dropping gallery of recent aurora photographs taken from space.

They were captured by Expedition 65 Flight Engineer Thomas Pesquet of ESA (European Space Agency) from the International Space Station (ISS).

The astronaut has been shooting this series since the beginning of August 2021.

He commented: “These last few days have been auroraspectacular! This amazing light show occurs when particles from the Sun hit Earth's magnetosphere, we were very lucky to see such outbursts and I don't remember such beautiful displays during Proxima. I think it is the most amazing thing I have ever seen that nature can give us. It is beautiful to see and photograph but also a visible show of our planet's atmosphere protecting us from radiation. I shot a few timelapses that will follow, it is another thing to watch the aurora dance!”

FEATURE - Chancenlos: 4 Geparde bringen ein Zebra zu Fall

It was spots versus stripes when four cheetahs set their sights on a zebra.

Wildlife photographer Ahmad Abu Ganem captured the scene in Kenya’s Maasai Mara as the big cats hunted their prey.

But, despite a brave defence in the form of a hoof kick, the zebra was no match for the athletic cheetah.

Ahmad says: “The Zebra did its best to outrun the cheetahs, and even tried to fight them off, but the cheetah were able to leap onto it and bring it down for their vital meal.”

Ready for the Olympics? These sporty squirrels certainly are.

These hilarious images are the work of animal photographer Geert Weggen.

He creates quirky scenes by placing tiny props and getting garden squirrels to interact.

The 52-year-old from Bispgarden, Sweden, explains: "For many years I did not see big sport events, but when the Euro football tournament was almost towards an end, I started to see some matches and liked it. But it was too late to do a squirrel series and so I thought that I would do an Olympic series instead, because I had about 3 weeks left for this event.

“There about 10 different squirrels, both young and old ones. To make them trust me, most of the time I move slowly and be very quiet. I show up often so that they get used to me. Also, in not giving them attention sometimes and doing other things, that can make them curious. And food helps, of course. When they understand that I am the one putting out food, the trust comes easier.

“I would say the boxing set-up is my favourite. I had this idea for years and made the props and bought the gloves many years ago, but never started to work at it I never saw this idea before in photography, and that made my choice.”

PICTURE SHOWS: Georgia DOT managed to completely demolish the bridge by Friday morning.
A truck hit a bridge so hard it shunted it six feet.

These shocking pictures show the aftermath of the crash in Georgia, USA, on Thursday (15 July).

The overpass crosses Interstate 16 in Treutlen County, which had to be closed following the accident.

A Georgia Department of Transportation spokesman said a dump truck carrying large tyres was driving at between 1:00-1:30am with its dump trailer up when it struck the bridge. He explained: “It actually moved the bridge off its set mark just under six feet, which is something a lot of our engineers have never seen before.” They confirmed the driver was “OK”.

Georgia DOT managed to completely demolish the bridge by Friday morning. They reported: “Overnight and early Friday morning crews were able to remove the GA HWY 86 Bridge over I-16 completely and began clearing debris from the roadway so that I-16 could safely reopen to traffic. Both Westbound travel lanes of I-16 are now open, two days sooner than expected.”
