    Jen Nollaig wins Christmas.

The mother-of-two (real name Jenny Wilson, Nollaig is the Irish word for Christmas) is currently counting down to the big day with "The 25 shades of Christmas" - an advent calendar of homemade festive eyewear.

The Dublin-based 36-year-old says she looks forward to Christmas all year - and is already thinking about the next festive season from Boxing Day onwards.

This year she has focused on festooning upcycled frames with extreme seasonal decorations.

Highlights include candy cane-influenced specs, 80s-style garish lantern decorations and liberal use of colourful baubles.

Jen has even got her family involved. Her mother Hilary Wilson, 70, dons an amazing silver snowflake piece, while 34-year-old sister Ash Gibney wears a piece entitled Fan Girl.

She explains: "I always remember being so excited to open up the door on my advent calendar as a kid but to be honest I never kept it for the full month, I mean there was chocolate in there. For me it’s all about the run up to Christmas so I wanted to create a collection that ties in with that idea of counting down to Christmas day. I have been showcasing a new pair of shades each day. I have been taking inspiration from various elements of Christmas and I have tried to use as many different types of Christmas decorations as I can.

"Each piece is a one of a kind and was made using upcycled frames and Christmas decorations - many, many decorations. I have tried to use as many different types as I can in the collection, both old and new.

"I hope that the collection inspires people to get creative by channelling their inner Christmas tree and embrace the fact that it is called the silly season. I mean why should we let the trees have all the fun."

An artist has celebrated ten years of the Poop emoji by representing it in 50 different forms.

Toronto-based Justin Poulsen's Poo-moji project gets creative with everybody's favourite ice cream-like, smiling stool.

Highlights include the poop appearing as a disco ball, mashed potato, a cake, a candle and even the shaving soap on a man's chin.

Visual Creator Justin, 29, explains: "I worked together on this idea with creative agency Rethink. We were really interested in the public's draw to the poop emoji as well as the physical shape and how other items take the same form (ice cream, slurpees, etc).

"Some of the ideas for how we depicted the poop emojis came from my past work (disco balls, ice cubes, candles). I had previously worked with these materials and the poo-moji video now acts as a subtle homage to my portfolio, as well as an amalgamation of my own artistic experience.

"Other ideas were completely new and were picked out of thin air (sand castle, eye patch, dollar bill)."

A newly engaged couple will be reunited with their engagement ring - after the groom to be dropped it down a New York grating.

Daniella Anthony and John Drennan, from Peterborough, England were visiting the Big Apple to celebrate ten years of dating.

Romantic John had popped the question in Central Park earlier in the day, however the ring wasn't the right size so he kept hold of it.

But a stroll through Times Square saw the ring escape his person and bounce down the grating.

The couple returned to Britain after feeling the ring was hopelessly lost.

Thankfully, the New York Police Department had spotted the incident on CCTV and put out a call for information on social media.

The couple's friends alerted them to the campaign and they contacted the NYPD.

They are now waiting to be reunited with the ring.

NYPD commented: "The (now) happy couple has been found! Case closed!"

The couple's friends alerted them to the campaign and they contacted the NYPD.

They are now waiting to be reunited with the ring.

NYPD commented: "The (now) happy couple has been found! Case closed!"

This incredible image appears to show a squadron of birds.

Dubbed "Short Eared Owl fly past with Goldfinch escort", the picture was taken by amateur photographer Richard Howlett at Burwell Fen, Cambridgeshire.

The Suffolk-based snapper says he had to wait five hours before an owl appeared.

Richard explains: "I had learnt that the owls could sometimes be seen in the winter, so arrived early one November morning and stood between two fields with my camera mounted on its tripod. After speaking with a few local walkers, I was advised that the owls normally appear a few hours before dusk. So, after standing in the same place for five hours, eventually I was lucky enough to spot the owl coming towards me. As it approached quite low, it disturbed the goldfinches that were feeding in the grasses. The finches scattered when they spotted the predator and all escaped unharmed. I am an amateur photographer and my hobby, of two years, consists of photographing wildlife whenever I get a chance to get out with my camera."

A record 1.97m people visited Chester Zoo last year, thanks to amazing inhabitants like the UK’s first sun bear, Kyra; one of a host of rare and endangered animals born there during 2018.

Already the UK’s most popular zoo, new figures reveal a total of 1,969,768 visitors in 2018 sets an all-time high in the attraction’s 88-year history - 4% up on its previous best in 2016.

The female cub Kyra, pictured here in November, delighted conservationists when she was born at Chester Zoo in June, not least given the remarkable survival story of her parents who were rescued from Cambodia.

Mum Milli and dad Toni were taken from the wild by poachers when they themselves were cubs and kept as pets. After being discovered by conservationists working for the Free The Bears organisation in Cambodia, the duo was then transferred to the UK to the Rare Species Conservation Centre in Kent and then to Chester Zoo.

The zoo saw an unprecedented number of rare animal births in 2018. From the UK’s first ever sun bear cub to the birth of a critically endangered rhino calf, conservationists at the zoo have successfully bred some of the world’s most highly threatened animals.

The zoo’s conservationists also achieved a number of high profile breakthroughs and successes in the wild, from the ground-breaking discovery of bongo in Uganda in 2018 to the rescue of 100 songbirds from the illegal wildlife trade and conservation support for UK native species like pine martens in Wales. Chester Zoo bosses have stated that funds generated from the record-breaking visitor figures will enable it to continue to prevent extinction in 2019.

Jamie Christon, Chief Operating Officer at the zoo, said:

“The whole zoo team would like to thank every single visitor that walked through our gates in 2018, helping us to prevent extinction around the world.

“We are fighting to ensure a future of an array of animals and plants – both here in Chester and through 80 vital conservation projects, s

‘Grumpy Cat 2.0’ displeased with injuries that land him in RSPCA hospital

Saul - or Grumpy Cat 2.0 as he’s been nicknamed - was rushed to the RSPCA’s animal hospital with injuries having been hit by a car

An RSPCA spokesperson explained: Saul the cat is very unhappy that he’s ended up in hospital after being hit by a car. Although staff at the RSPCA’s London hospital are ensuring the ginger puss is happy and comfortable, he’s very displeased at being there at all. In fact, the stray cat looks so annoyed all the time that he’s gained the nickname Grumpy Cat 2.0!"

But he has a good reason for his displeasure.

The scowling ginger puss was found on 15 October in Peckham High Street with some nasty injuries which have contributed to his crabby expression.

A man concerned for the cat contacted the RSPCA and he was taken to the charity’s Putney Animal Hospital.

RSPCA London Veterinary Director Caroline Allen, said: “Saul was brought in by one of our animal collection officers after a gentleman found him wandering along the High Street in Peckham in the rain.

“He was in a very sorry state with and had discharge coming from his eyes and nose and looked very poorly indeed.

“We believe he was involved in a road traffic accident as we found he had injured his jaw, teeth and one eye - all leading to his rather unique look!

“He’s had to have his jaw wired so it’s no surprise he’s a little grumpy!”

However he is being very well cared for by the hospital team and is receiving lots of fuss and all the medications he needs and is actually very happy and affectionate - not that his facial expression would give him away! Sadly, his expression is probably at least partially caused by the trauma he has suffered.

Saul wasn’t microchipped and staff believe he’s been living as a stray. However, the Tom cat is very friendly and is enjoying being spoiled by the veterinary nurses.

What happens when rocket scientists carve pumpkins?

Pumpkins created by engineers for a contest at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, in Pasadena, California, were on display during Halloween festivities on Monday (29 Oct), which also coincide with JPL's birthday.

HIghlights included a planet eating a satellite, a Banksy-style stencil display, and a pumpkin-headed, Day of the Dead-inspired guitar player.

Once a year at Halloween, JPLers take a break from building robots that explore the solar system to craft dramatic creations that have as much in common with standard jack-o'-lanterns as paper airplanes do with NASA spacecraft. Now in its seventh year, the unofficial pumpkin carving contest gives engineers a chance to flex their creative muscles and bond as a team, said NASA mechanical engineer Mike Meacham, who is co-running the one-hour competition this year.

"I don't think, even at the time, they appreciated just how seriously our engineers were going to take it," he said of the first contest. In 2017, Meacham - who works on the entry, descent and landing of the Mars 2020 rover - and his team won third place with a green Frankenstein gourd that hovered in mid-air, suspended by a mini-parachute and an air blower.

The rules are simple: no planning, carving or competing during work hours. The contest takes place during the engineering section's lunch break.

"They do it all in their own time," said Meacham, who's been brainstorming his ideas for six months. "They go home, use their own resources, plan it out, and all we give them is a pumpkin."

Iona Brockie, an engineer on the Mars 2020 rover, said the contest gives her a chance to admire the talent of her colleagues. After two years of placing second, her team took first last year, with a celestial pirate ship that sailed past Jupiter on an ocean of dry ice. Inspired by NASA's future mission to Jupiter's icy moon Europa, Brockie and her teammates used their mechanical engineering know-how to

When you’re a 3400lb Asian elephant and want to get in on the Halloween celebrations even the biggest of store bought pumpkins just won’t cut it!

So when a professional pumpkin carver, who is renowned for producing gargantuan specimens, offers you a 530lb treat…..it’s like all your Halloweens have come at once!

This is exactly what happened at Blackpool Zoo when Simon McMinnis offered a surplus super sized pumpkin to the zoo’s five elephants.

The logistics of getting the mammoth treat from Simon’s home in Poulton to the zoo’s Project Elephant Base Camp weren’t quite as complicated as transporting elephants Minbu, Tara, Noorjahan and Esha from their previous home at Twycross Zoo to join resident elephant Kate this year, but it was still a challenge!

It took five people to carry it from its poly-tunnel home to the waiting van….where it was strapped in for its safety and comfort!

Specialist equipment was waiting to move it into position at Blackpool Zoo and the elephants made light work of demolishing and devouring it in front of delighted visitors on Sunday!

Della Belk, PR and Marketing Manager at Blackpool Zoo, was part of the crack team of pumpkin transporters and said: “Simon is a good friend of the zoo and has created some amazing pumpkin sculptures of our animals over the years.

“This year has been a bumper year for pumpkins in general so when Simon was left with a surplus 530lb specimen he very kindly offered it to us for our elephants.

“Thankfully the collection went without a hitch and the elephants were delighted with their super-sized treat!

“I would like to thank Simon for his ongoing support of Blackpool Zoo.”

Simon, whose stunning carvings have drawn attention from all over the world for a decade, added: “This year’s fantastic weather was perfect for growing and as a result I was left with somewhat of a giant glut!

“I knew the zoo had had four new massive arrivals this ye

Nasa said Thursday (25 Oct) they have "captured the Ghost of Cassiopeia".

(COVER IMAGES ALSO HAVE A BRAND NEW GALLERY OF SPOOKY HALLOWEEN SPACE PICTURES: info@cover-images.com)

However, rather than a supernatural encounter, the space agency refer to the amazing sight of "the Ghost of Cassiopeia," officially known as IC 63, located 550 light-years away in the constellation Cassiopeia the Queen.

It features powerful gushers of energy from seething stars which NASA says "sculpt eerie-looking figures with long, flowing veils of gas and dust."

NASA explain: "The nebula’s ethereal glow might remind people of apparitions such as those reported by paranormal investigators. In reality, it's simply hydrogen that is being bombarded with ultraviolet radiation from the nearby, blue-giant star Gamma Cassiopeiae (not seen here), causing it to glow in red light. The blue colour is from light reflected off of the nebula’s dust.

"The IC 63 nebula is not the only object under the influence of the blinding star, which unleashes as much energy as 34,000 suns. The Ghost Nebula is part of a much larger nebulous region surrounding Gamma Cassiopeiae that measures approximately two degrees on the sky — roughly four times as wide as the full Moon.

"The constellation Cassiopeia is visible every clear night from mid-northern and higher latitudes. Its distinctive "W" asterism, which forms the queen's throne, is best seen high in the sky on autumn and winter evenings. Gamma Cassiopeiae, the middle star in the W, is visible to the unaided eye, but a large telescope is needed to see IC 63. Hubble photographed IC 63 in August 2016."

An Italian classic is about to hit the water.

The Jet Vespa sees the iconic scooter blended with a modern jet ski.

The brainchild of Rome-based Lazzarini Design Studio, it takes cues from the "legendary Vespa 50 special from the 60's".

Pierpaolo Lazzarin says the craft "will offer 39hp and 32 knts in less than two metres of water."

He explains: "While the vehicle is not running, to facilitate the accommodation/access of the passengers, a gimbal self balancing system keeps the jet vespa aligned with the water surface."

Lazzarini propose the water toy in two variants: equipped with an electric 39hp engine for $25,000; equipped with a 330cc 39hp twin stroke engine at $19,000.

Both electric variants will have an estimated three operating hours.

Pierpaolo says pre-orders are welcome with first deliveries expected by summer 2019.

Vespa is an Italian brand of scooter manufactured by Piaggio. The name means wasp in Italian. The Vespa has evolved from a single model motor scooter manufactured in 1946 by Piaggio & Co. S.p.A. of Pontedera, Italy to a full line of scooters and one of seven companies today owned by Piaggio.

Fancy a ferris wheel in your back garden? Merry-go-round on your driveway?

A complete amusement park will go under the hammer this Thursday (25 Oct).

The Heritage Square Amusement Park in Golden, Colorado, closed on 1 July after reportedly struggling financially.

Now Norton Auctioneers have been commissioned to sell the assets.

According to Norton, everything will be sold at the cash auction, including large rides, a zip line, arcade machines, go karts, restaurant equipment, bins, tables and benches.
