Caring for more than 10,000 animals, London Zoo’s keepers spend hours throughout the year recording the weights and measurements of the animals –information which provides a critical insight into their health and wellbeing.

The Annual Weigh-In is a chance for keepers at the conservation zoo to make sure the information they’ve recorded is up-to-date and accurate, with each measurement then added to the Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS), a database shared with zoos all over the world that helps zookeepers to compare important information on thousands of threatened species.

ZSL London Zoo keepers record each animal’s vital statistics for the Annual Weigh In. With more than 14,000 animals in their care, London Zoo’s keepers spend hours throughout the year recording the heights and weights of all the animals – vital information which helps them to monitor their health and wellbeing.

The Annual Weigh In is a chance for keepers at the conservation zoo to make sure the information they’ve recorded is up-to-date and accurate, with each measurement then added to the Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS), a database shared with zoos all over the world that helps zookeepers to compare important information on thousands of threatened species.

A huge-scale operation is about to get underway at Whipsnade Zoo, as keepers coax thousands of animals, including lemurs, butterflies and hippos, to step onto the scales for the Zoo's Annual Weigh In, on Monday 21 August.

An important part of their expert care, all creatures great and small will have their vital statistics recorded, ensuring zookeepers and veterinarians keep track of the health and wellbeing of the 10,000 animals at the UK's largest Zoo.

European brown bears Minnie, Mana and Naya will take part in the Annual Weigh In for the first time since their April arrival at the conservation zoo, along with fellow first timer, four-month-old Endangered Przewalski's foal Luujin.

Six-year-old hippo Hodor will step onto an industrial sized set of scales, while the conservation zoo's smallest inhabitants, including Critically Endangered desertas wolf spiders, will require extra sensitive equipment to weigh them accurately.

All the animals' weights and measurements are recorded in a shared database called the Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS), which helps zookeepers around the world compare important information on thousands of threatened species.
