Hitler's Alpine Headquarters
rare images from Hitlers hide out in Austria, these images where produced by theNazis to try and show what a nice chap he was!
Photo shows:Chancellor Adolf Hitler in Berchtesgaden.
Bearing a postmark of 29.12.33, this image sees Hitler in the company of a small group standing before Haus Wachenfeld. The scene appears non-contrived, informal and relaxed. Apparently surprised, the man on the right draws attention to the presence of the photographer. The man second from the left is Julius Schreck, Hitler’s chauffeur and bodyguard. At the time of his death on 16 May 1936, Schreck held the rank of Brigadefu?hrer (Brigadier) in the SS. Schreck, who was buried in Munich, was given a state funeral attended by most of the Nazi hierarchy. Adolf Hitler delivered the eulogy.

Photo shows: Thank you very much.
Another of Fra?ulein Nienau’s regular visits to the Obersalzberg provides yet another photo opportunity. Disregarding all others Hitler directs all his attention towards his little visitor. The unfortunate members of the public in the background, many of whom may have travelled some distance to see the Fu?hrer, are temporarily ignored. The interaction between Hitler and Bernile would indicate that the child has been given presents by the Fu?hrer. Hitler’s contemporaries have confirmed that he felt genuine affection for this little girl, a regular visitor to the Obersalzberg until the unnecessary meddling of an interfering Party official into the child’s ancestry interrupted her visits for a time.

Photo shows: A little one’s visit on Obersalzberg.
This little girl, Rosa Bernile Nienau from Munich became a favourite on the Obersalzberg. She and her mother, a doctor’s widow from Munich, visited the Obersalzberg for the first time in 1932. The following year, 1933, when informed that he and the child shared the same birthday, 20th April, Hitler singled her out from the large crowd gathered below Haus Wachenfeld. Having chatted to the lively and engaging little girl Hitler invited her up to the house. The Fu?hrer then walked hand- in-hand with the child back to Haus Wachenfeld. Bernile was treated to strawberries and whipped cream on the terrace on that occasion. Thereafter Hitler often invited Frau Nienau and her charming daughter to visit him on the Obersalzberg. Like Hitler, Bernile’s father had won the Iron Cross First Class during the First World War. Heinrich Hoffmann took numerous photographs of Hitler together with Bernile during her visits. Despite knowing that Bernile was ‘Viertelju?din’ (quarter Jewish), Hitler continued to correspond with the child. Bernile and her mother resumed their visits to Haus Wachenfeld and this continued until 1938. In May that year the intervention of one of Hitler’s adjutants finally brought an end to these visits. Hitler’s little friend died in a Munich hospital on 5 October 1943, aged seventeen. She was buried in Munich’s Westfriedhof. While undoubtedly endearing images, these Hoffmann photographs of Hitler and Bernile had great propaganda value in the way they were used to present the Fu?hrer as fond of children, a man truly in touch with the young. Nevertheless, Hitler’s contemporaries, among them members of his own staff, have stated that he was genuinely very fond of children and enjoyed their company.

Photo shows: The Fu?hrer on the terrace of Haus Wachenfeld.
A smiling Hitler wearing a traditional Bavarian jacket greets the crowds lining the road below the house with the Nazi salute. Such scenes were commonplace during the early days of Hitler’s Chancellorship prior to the creation of the Fu?hrersperrgebiet (Restricted Area of the Fu?hrer) and the introduction of greater security on the Obersalzberg after 1936.

This pleasant and relaxed scene shows guests enjoying the view from the hotel terrace towards Haus Wachenfeld. This image gives a good indication of how near Hotel zum Tu?rken actually was to the Fu?hrer’s residence. The terrace provided an excellent viewing platform constantly used by those hoping to catch a glimpse of Hitler when he was on the Obersalzberg.

Hitler takes a telephone call informing him of the outcome of the plebiscite on the disputed Saar region held on 13 January 1935. In 1919 and according to the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, the League of Nations took over administration of the area. In 1920, the French took control of the region.
With over 90 per cent of the electorate having voted for a return to Germany and the Reich it is small wonder that the Fu?hrer appears extremely pleased.

Photo shows: The Fu?hrer with his most loyal supporters in Bad Elster, 22 June, 1930.
Included in this small group of leading Nazis are, from left to right; Heinrich Himmler (1900-45), head of the SS and chief of Gestapo. Behind Himmler stands Martin Mutschmann (1879-1947), Gauleiter of Saxony. The man standing in the doorway is Karl Weinrich (1887-1973), Gauleiter of Kurhessen. Beside Himmler stands Dr Wilhelm Frick (1877-1946), Reich Minister for the Interior. Adolf Hitler. Immediately behind Hitler stands Dr Joseph Goebbels (1897-1945), Minister for Propaganda. Julius Schaub (1898-1967), adjutant to Hitler. General Franz Ritter von Epp (1868-1947), Governor of Bavaria and Reich Leader of the NSDAP. On the extreme right stands Hermann Go?ring (1893-1946), chief of the Luftwaffe and Reich President. Bad Elster is a small town situated in southern Saxony close to the Czech border. This photograph was probably taken at the time of the provincial elections held in the region in June 1930, which resulted in the Nazis becoming the second strongest party in Saxony. Such early images depicting the main Nazi leadership together in this way, are quite rare.

Photo shows: The Fu?hrer at Hintersee near Berchtesgaden.
Yet another charming image from the continuing programme for the winning of hearts and minds. Hitler chats with two local children while visiting the Hintersee not far from Berchtesgaden. Following an unbelievable stroke of luck and by sheer coincidence, I discovered that the small boy seen photographed with Hitler still lived in the region. Here was an opportunity not to be missed; having acquired a telephone number I made contact with this gentleman and, having explained my interest, he kindly agreed to a meeting later that same week.
The bus journey from Berchtesgaden to Hintersee takes about forty-five minutes, passing through some of the most wonderful Alpine scenery on the way. On arrival at Hintersee I made my way to Bartels Alpenhof, the address I had been given for our two o’clock meeting. Bartels Alpenhof is a long established family business where, on making enquiries, I was led to the large kitchen where I was introduced to the subject of my attention. Gerhard Bartels, now over eighty years old, is a charming man who continues to work in the hotel as he has done for almost seventy years. We spent the next hour talking in a quiet part of the hotel where Gerhard, who gave generously of his time, recalled what he remembered from the occasion of being photographed with Hitler in the summer of 1937.

Photo shows: Our Fu?hrer at Hintersee with Go?ring, Bru?ckner and his sister.
This photograph shows Hitler and his entourage on yet another visit to the Hintersee. Hitler is accompanied by Go?ring (centre) and his adjutant Wilhelm Bru?ckner, who is almost completely hidden by the lady on the left. However, what is unique and quite remarkable about this particular image is the fact that this lady is Adolf Hitler’s sister, Paula. As previously mentioned, Paula Hitler, at her brother’s request, adopted the family name Wolf to avoid any unnecessary public attention. It has been said that Hitler was somewhat distant and aloof in his relationships with close family members. This single and quite unique image certainly challenges that argument in so far as his relationship with his only surviving full sibling is concerned. Paula, the last child of Alois and Klara Hitler was born on 21 January 1896. She described her childhood relationship with her brother as a mixture of almost continuous bickering and great affection. Paula stated that ‘Adi’, as he was known to the family, constantly challenged his father’s wishes; that this led to harshness with Adolf being beaten almost daily.

Photo shows: The Fu?hrer on the Ko?nigssee.
The beautiful Ko?nigssee (King’s Lake) near Berchtesgaden has been a popular tourist attraction for many years. Here we see Hitler sitting in the stern of one of the many pleasure craft that travel the lake. These boats are electrically powered so as to eliminate the risk of pollution to the clear waters. The lake is the cleanest in Germany. Being some eight kilometres (five miles) long and 1,200 metres (3?4 mile) wide the Ko?nigssee has been compared to a Norwegian fjord. At almost 200 metres (650 feet) the Ko?nigssee is very deep. The Fu?hrer’s expression and demeanour suggest his mind may be occupied elsewhere.

The patience of the Party faithful waiting on the road below Haus Wachenfeld is rewarded as the Fu?hrer appears on the terrace. Such scenes were quite commonplace through the early years of Hitler’s Chancellorship. The small house visible on the left by the roadside is Haus Salzburgblick. This property stood close to where the last SS guardhouse that controlled access to the inner security zone would be built in late 1936 early 1937 (see image 129). Unfortunately such close proximity to the Fu?hrer’s property meant Martin Bormann ordered Haus Salzburgblick be demolished following the introduction of these increased security measures on the Obersalzberg.

By engaging this endearing child in this attentive way, Hitler projects the image of a caring and approachable leader; a man truly in touch with his people, even with children. Nazi innovation involving the production of these seductive vote-winning images has not been wasted on today’s politicians; similarly, they too fully appreciate the appeal and importance of being seen and photographed in the company of such delightful subjects. This particular child, Bernile Nienau, and her relationship with Hitler will be discussed later.

Hitler, the ordinary man enjoying life’s simple pleasures rests with his faithful companion, his German Shepherd, ‘Blonda’. While this image might conjure such interpretation, the fact remains that Hitler had great affection for his dogs and always enjoyed walking on the Obersalzberg. This photograph was taken on the same occasion as postcards numbers 187 and 191, this can be determined in two ways; firstly, Hitler is seen wearing the same suit in all cases; secondly, the building in the background together with the furniture seen in postcards numbers 187 and 192 are one and the same.

Photo shows: Whether Hitler’s decision or that of the photographer, an attempt is made to get just one more photograph with the still immaculately dressed Gerhard Bartels who appears in postcard number 187. However it is plainly obvious that young Gerhard has had quite enough; he draws away from the Fu?hrer, who in turn keeps hold of the boy lest he run off. Consequently, and with this in mind, it is difficult to understand why an image which clearly fails in its objective to depict the warm interaction between Hitler and the young was ever passed for publication. We can safely assume that this would have been the last photograph taken of Hitler and little Gerhard on the day; further attempts would have necessitated tying the youngster to a chair to keep him from his playmates.
