To Fire It Would Require 200 People And A Space As Large As Wembley Stadium. And With An Hour Needed To Reload--enough Time For Anyone To Locate And Destroy It--it Must Be At Most A One Or Two-shot Weapon. But Using Conventional Explosives It Could Target Israel Or Iran--and With A Rocket-assisted Device It Could Reach Large Areas Of Europe The Soviet Union And North Africa.

The farmer who brought us Britain's biggest bullock has found another record breaker - measuring 6ft 3in tall.
Arthur Duckett, 78, reckons massive Field Marshall, his six-year-old Charolet bull, weighing in at 1,360 kilos will be crowned the nations biggest. Arthur, a farmer, from Burnham-on-sea, Somerset, immediately saw the bull's potential, and said it will put on 300 kilos in the next year. He bought the white bullock two years ago and decided to keep it as a pet when he realised it was a one-off.
Two years ago Arthur and his wife Helen broke records with their 6ft 5in bull Colonel, who weighed 3,500lbs. The Colonel and Field Marshall are kept in a 22-acre field on Arthur's farm, and is in good company as he shares the plot with a 5ft 6in tall Highland steer called The Captain. 717981f

It is census time in Sydney's Royal Botanic Gardens. But it is not humans who are being counted. It is the furry winged invaders that occupied the green sanctuary during the drought and have turned it into their inner-city squat. A year ago, said Tim Entwisle, the executive director of the Botanic Gardens Trust, it was thought the gardens were home to about 11,000 grey-headed flying foxes. Now, he suspects, there could be twice that many. "They are slowly trashing the place," he said. Branches have been breaking under their weight and their urine and droppings have been poisoning plants. "They are destroying the palm grove," said Dr Entwisle. "They are killing the trees. We have had 12 trees die and 45 are on the critical list. A couple on the critical list were planted in the 1820s."Although the new count, being undertaken by volunteers, will not be completed for several weeks, Dr Entwisle expects it will confirm that previous estimates of the flying fox population have been wildly underestimated. Among trees under threat is a flowering ash that was almost killed by the drought. In the 1990s, flying fox numbers were dramatically reduced by staff bashing metal lids, frightening the animals away. Now the gardens trust is seeking government permission to resume the evictions, possibly using mobile loud speakers on buggies to disturb them. Dr Entwisle said the evictions, if approved, would probably not begin until autumn next year, after the next breeding season. "The welfare of the flying foxes is important to us."

    YOUNG BALLERINAS RE-CREATE ICONIC PICTURES

Eighty years after a world famous ballerina visited Abbotsbury Swannery, in order to draw inspiration for her role in Swan Lake, her iconic visit has been re-created.

Famous Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova visited the swannery in Dorset with her dance troupe in the 1920s in order to study the birds as inspiration for her production of the much-loved ballet, Swan Lake.

Now, the Dorchester Ballet and Dance Club has marked its 50th anniversary by recreating Ms Pavlova's visit.

Ms Pavlova, who died in 1931, is perhaps best known for her performance of The Dying Swan, a dance choreographed to the music Le Cygne.

The ballerina was inspired by swans she had seen in public parks when it came to choreographing the solo dance.

So it made sense for her to visit Abbotsbury, the only place in the world where visitors can walk through the heart of a colony of nesting mute swans, to research her Swan Lake role.

Pictures of Pavlova's visit were only discovered recently when the swannery's general manager John Houston was leafing through a box of old photographs.

Inspired by the images, which show the ballerinas from Pavlov's troupe mingling with the swans in full costume, the Dorchester club has tried to recreate them.

The club, which was founded in the 1950s, even has its own connection with Pavlova; one of its teachers, Elizabeth Goodchild, trained under Ms Pavlova's great rival Tamara Karsavina.

Rosie Swale-Pope finishes her run around the world, Tenby, Wales, Britain - 25 Aug 2008
A grandmother from Tenby in South West Wales is celebrating her return home after spending the last five years running around the world. Rosie Swale Pope left her home in October 2003 to set off on her marathon journey in order to raise awareness of prostate cancer after it claimed the life of her husband. She returned to a rapturous reception from residents in her home town as she made the final steps on her gruelling 20,000 mile trip. The 61-year-old hobbled into Tenby on crutches after being diagnosed with stress fractures, but that didn't stop her celebrating when she reached the sign that marked the entrance to the town. During her epic journey Rosie has braved freezing temperatures in the wastes of Siberia and Alaska, has been hit by a bus, suffered pneumonia and frostbite and had a breast cancer scare. Clasping a glass of champagne she saluted the crowd who gathered to welcome her home, commenting that she was "overwhelmed" by everyone (FOTO:DUKAS/REX)

    THE WORLD'S BEST GHOST PHOTOGRAPHS

An eerie face in a castle window, a mysterious image of a boy in the woods and an otherworldly silhouette on a beach have all been voted among the world's best ghost photographs.

Psychologist Professor Richard Wiseman (University of Hertfordshire) has announced the results of the largest ever investigation into the photographic evidence for ghosts.

The study, undertaken as part of the Edinburgh International Science Festival, was launched a month ago when the public were asked to submit their most mysterious 'ghostly' photographs for analysis. The best of these images were then posted on the project website, and visitors invited to comment, and vote on whether they believed the photographs contained a genuine ghost.

"The response was remarkable", commented Professor Wiseman. "We received over 250 photographs from all around the world, had thousands of comments, and over a quarter of a million votes".

The majority of the images showed mysterious-looking orbs, mists, figures and faces.

"Many of the photographs can be easily explained", noted co-organiser and photographer Gordon Rutter. "Orbs can be caused by the camera flash reflecting off tiny dust particles, mists can result from condensed breath in front of the lens, long exposures can create ghostly figures, and apparent faces are often people seeing patterns in random shapes".

The top five photographs, ordered by the percentage of people who believed that they contained a genuine ghost (shown in brackets) were as follows:

Fifth place: The ghost in the mirror (26%). The photographer says that no one else was around when he took this picture of his car, and thus he cannot explain the 'ghostly' face in the left wing mirror. Sceptics argue that the 'face' could be a reflection of t...
