    ROCK PIONEER BO DIDDLEY DIES

Musician Bo Diddley has died at the age of 79.

The Grammy-winning singer-guitarist died of heart failure in Florida, his spokeswoman said.

A world-renowned guitarist and vocalist, who was known for his hybrid hits that melded rock and blues, he was known for his homemade square guitar, dark glasses and black hat.

He rose to fame in 1955 when he topped the R&B charts with the song Bo Diddley. His other hits include Who Do You Love, Before You Accuse Me, and Mona.

His signature beat would influence rock 'n' roll for decades, while the rhythm on early became known as the "Bo Diddley" beat.

Diddley was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame in January 1987, who would say of his sound: "This distinctive, African-based 5/4 rhythm pattern (which goes bomp-bomp-bomp bomp-bomp) was picked up from Diddley by other artists and has been a distinctive and recurring element in rock 'n' roll through the decades."

He had suffered a heart attack in August 2007, three months after suffering a stroke which affected his ability to speak.
