A freediving world champion has set an impressive new record by swimming 175m beneath the ice of a frozen lake in Finland. The successful attempt by Frenchman Arthur Guerin, 32, was catalogued by his photographer friend Alex Voyer. Alex comments: "My friend Arthur wanted to make an absolutely crazy record: freediving the longest distance ever never made under the ice. "So he went to Finland on a icy lake to make it, surrounded by special freedivers, scuba divers, safety team, and a big organisation which made it possible". According to Alex freediving under the ice is much more difficult than in any other waters.

The Pacific island nation of Palau has become home to the sixth largest marine sanctuary in the world.

The Micronesian reserve, now the largest in the Pacific, will permit no fishing or mining. Palau also established the world's first shark sanctuary in 2009.

The tiny island nation has set aside 500,000 square kilometres -- 80 percent -- of its maritime territory, for full protection. That's the highest percentage of an exclusive economic zone devoted to marine conservation by any country in the world. (FOTO: DUKAS/PHOTOSHOT)
