Police responded with tear gas and flash bombs. Greece has to save money as a condition of a 110bn-euro international bailout package. However, the proposed cuts have infuriated workers and trade unions who say that it is ordinary people who are being penalised for an economic crisis that has been created by corrupt politicians.
