Demonstration against the Government's financial policies, Athens, Greece - 05 May 2010
Three people have been killed after a bank in Athens was firebombed amid city-wide protests. Tens of thousands of people have poured into the Greek capital as part of a 24-hour walkout over the country's planned spending cuts and austerity measures. The proposed moves have also seen similar protests occur across the country. In Athens police clashed with demonstrators as violence flared, with officers and emergency services being attacked with petrol bombs, rocks and other projectiles. Police responded with tear gas and flash bombs. Greece has to save money as a condition of a 110bn-euro international bailout package. However, the proposed cuts have infuriated workers and trade unions who say that it is ordinary people who are being penalised for an economic crisis that has been created by corrupt politicians.
