Her Majesty The Queen celebrates 135 years of the Foreign Press Association (FPA) at the annual FPA Awards ceremony at the Sheraton Grand Park Lane, London, UK.
20th November 2023 .
The Queen is welcomed to the Foreign Press Awards by Deborah Bonetti, Director of the Foreign Press Association and presented with a lifetime FPA Press card
The Foreign Press Association in London is the oldest and largest association of foreign correspondents in the world and was founded in 1888. Back then, news of Jack the Ripper travelled abroad and a group of journalists (mainly for Europe) arrived in London, attempting to cover the case. Finding it difficult to find their footing in a new and difficult city, they decided to join forces to gain access to sources and news, and so the FPA was founded. It now counts over 500 full members and is a member of the UK Press Card Authority, giving out over 2200 press cards a year to foreign journalists working in the capital.
It holds its annual Awards gala (the FPA Awards) once a year, in November. It’s the only awards ceremony of its kind that puts together domestic and international journalism. The approximately 360 guests are mainly journalists (both British and international) and nominees for each category of the awards.
There are 12 categories:
1.

Her Majesty The Queen celebrates 135 years of the Foreign Press Association (FPA) at the annual FPA Awards ceremony at the Sheraton Grand Park Lane, London, UK.
20th November 2023 .
Her Majesty The Queen is received at the Sheraton Grand by the Lord Lieutenant of Greater London, Sir Ken Olisa.
The Queen is welcomed to the Foreign Press Awards by Deborah Bonetti, Director of the Foreign Press Association and Dagmar Seeland, President of the Foreign Press Association.
Her Majesty meets the FPA Committee (comprising international journalists), the judges and the 33 nominees in every journalism category at the Awards.
The Queen gives a keynote address and is presented with an Honorary Membership of the Foreign Press Association.
His Majesty The King attended the awards as The Prince of Wales in 2008 and is an honorary member of the FPA.
1.

2.

3.

Special Military celebrations in London to mark the first anniversary of the accession to the throne of His Majesty The King, Hyde Park, London, UK.
Special Military celebrations in London to mark the first anniversary of the accession to the throne of His Majesty The King, Hyde Park, London, UK.
8th September 2023.
The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery fire a 41 Gun Royal Salute from 1200hrs
supported by the Band of the Grenadier Guards in Hyde Park
The soldiers, horses and Guns of The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery ride out from their forward mounting base in Wellington Barracks on Birdcage Walk, Westminster, to position their guns for the salute in Hyde Park. The Gunners wear full a distinctive dress uniform which includes gold braided jackets and busby hats. The guns are the Regiment’s Colours (equivalent of an infantry regiment’s ceremonial flag with battle honours) and so are afforded due respect throughout the route.
Shortly before midday, riding at speed from the Marble Arch end of Hyde Park, parallel with Park Lane, 71 horses, pulling six First World War era 13-pounder Field Guns over the grass, will quickly place the guns into position for the Royal Salute beside the six pre-positioned ammunition boxes. The guns are quickly detached, the horses escorted to a safe area, and, on the word of command, each of the six guns will fire blank artillery rounds at ten-second intervals until forty-one shots have been fired, each sending a puff of white smoke into the air. The horses and riders will then collect the guns and escort them back through London to Wellington Barracks. Throughout, The Band of the Grenadier Guards, conducted by Captain Robert Smith, will provide musical accompaniment around the Salute.
