Stephen Hawking. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (BAS) will move the minute hand of its closely watched 'Doomsday Clock' to reflect growing concerns about a 'Second Nuclear Age' marked by worsening threats, including: nuclear ambitions in Iran and North Korea, unsecured nuclear materials in Russia and elsewhere, the continuing 'launch-ready' status of 2,000 of the 25,000 nuclear weapons held by the U.S. and Russia, escalating terrorism, and new pressure from climate change for expanded civilian nuclear power that could increase proliferation risks. This is the first time that climate change has been factored into an adjustment of the hands of the clock.

    Holidays of the Future
Our annual break in the sun is being redefined as holidaymakers, tour operators, hotels and resorts all adapt and innovate to save the world's ever dwindling resources.

According to a major report sustainable holidays must represent the future of mass tourism.

Carried out for Thomson Holidays by The Future Laboratory, the Sustainable Holiday Futures report reveals that change is needed to prevent a number of bleak scenarios from becoming reality by 2030.

Looking ahead to 2030, the report predicts a number of exciting new trends and developments. These include:

    - A new generation of airships featuring stunning, cathedral-like internal spaces housing bars, restaurants and even apartments, recreating the golden age of travel and creating a new style of travel called 'slowtopianism'.

    - Aqua-villages: zero-impact floating resorts which harvest energy from the sun, wind and rain, locally source all materials and food and which can be moved leaving no trace of its presence.

    - Imagined villages built on former urban or brownfield sites, created as artificial or imagined worlds to provide respite from the real world

    - The transformation of the world's largest airports into aerovilles. Destinations in their own right featuring state-of-the-art cinemas, hotels and restaurants.

    - Second-generation biofuels developed from algae which will be mixed with jet fuel to power aircraft with significantly reduced carbon emissions.

As part of the report, Thomson has also unveiled its hotel room of the future, which includes a wide range of energy saving features which they predict will be commonplace in the coming years.

The room features a water-efficient bathroom where water from the wash basin and shower is used to flush the toilet, as well as a shower with eco-flow controls and a Waterpebble...

    Nosy Baby Penguin Gets Hen-Pecked
A baby penguin that has been starting fights is having to be handreared by zoo staff to stop him from being, quite literally, henpecked.

Living up to his namesake, baby Rockhopper penguin Rocky has been punching above his weight after being let loose with the adult Humboldt penguins.

The 10-week-old curious youngster has been sticking his beak into other penguin's business, much to their annoyance.

Showing his independent streak, the little penguin has been wandering away from his mum and barging into the nests of the Humboldt penguins, who are busy guarding their eggs.

And after the nosy youngster became the recipient of one too many annoyed pecks keepers decided that he should be removed for his own safety.

As such Rocky is now being reared in the comfort of a special indoor nursery, where he will remain until he is a little more mature.

Part of his daily routine now sees him being carefully weighed until he reaches his fully grown weight of around 2.75 kilograms.

Once he reaches this weight he will be better able to fend for himself and will be let back into the penguin enclosure.

To help him beef up, keepers feed him a diet of whole sprats three times a day.

Rocky is the first offspring from Whipsnade's popular Rockhopper couple Rita and Raef.

Old Government House in Auckland, completed in 1856, was the first mansion of its kind built in New Zealand. Classical in style with much of the timber facade cut to resemble stone, it played an important part in the government of New Zealand until 1865 when the capital was moved to Wellington. For the next century it was Auckland's viceregal residence. Royalty stayed there six times and the present Queen broadcast her Christmas speech to the Commonwealth from upstairs in 1953. Astra Woodcraft and her daughter Kate escaped Scientology when Astra was pregnant with Kate 10 years ago. Astra was born into Scientology, raised by an American mother and British father who moved her from the UK at a young age to live as Scientologists in Florida and California. Astra was pushed to join the Sea Organisation to work for Scientology and after marrying at 15 she became pregnant in an attempt to leave the cult. She was pressured to have an abortion by Scientologists and after refusing was allowed to leave. Before she was allowed to leave she was forced under duress to sign a waiver saying her experiences with Scientology had always been good. She has since spoken out about her life growing up in Scientology and has formed a website about her experiences
