ARTILLERYMEN WITH THE FLEET
With a party of 14 of officers and men of the Royal artillery aboard, the' Vanguard', Britain's only operational battleship, has returned to Portland from a training crew of the home fleet in Gibraltar.
The Royal artillery men, who had an extra thrill when the warship - homeward bound - went to help a French ship in distress in the Bay of Biscay, accompanied the ' Vanguard ' at the invitation of captain G.V. Gladstone.
The voyage of the artillery men follows the recent affiliations between the ship and the Royal Regiment of Artillery.
the party was chosen from units in southern England.

R.S.M. IS HOME , LETS EVERYBODY KNOW
After 24 years' service abroad, the first Battalion the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment - last British troops to leave Greece - arrived at Southampton today in the ' Empire Windrush'.
The Battalion, away since October, 1925, will now have quarters in Blenheim barracks (named after the principal battle not of the regiments) at Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk.
The Queen is Colonel-in-chief of the regiment .
PICTURE SHOWS:-Full-throated announcement of his arrival by regimental Sergeant-Major G.Robinson, M.B.E. at Southampton today.
R.S.M.Robinson, who is from Barnard Castle, Durham, has had 16 years' service with the guards, nine with the Beds and herts.

The Nivens had just arrived at Southampton from America the Cunard liner ' Queen Mary '. The two men have been friends since they served together in the Highland light infantry in 1929. Mr. Trubshawe - sometimes to be glimpsed in David Niven films - was best man at the actor's wedding, is godfather to the Niven children and always greets the Nivens on their return to England.

Family preparing to sail around the world in search of the ' dream island ' where they will enjoy a more natural life are 46 year-old Mr Christian Theodore Burchard, until recently an accountant in Durban, South Africa, his twenty-seven-year-old wife, Audrey, and their two-year-old son, Christian. They arrived in Southampton aboard the liner ' Arundel Castle ' from Cape Town. Mr Burchard will purchase a 33 to 40 - foot auxiliary sailing yacht : he will sail (and navigate himself) around the world in search of a Private ' Utopia '. The family intend to leave Falmouth in April, call at Gibraltar, then head for the West Indies. After that, they will call at New York, eventually making their way to the Fiji Islands by way of the Panama Canal.

These amazing pictures show sailors and marines from the U.S. Navy taking part in what they call 'swim calls'.
Most recently pictured earlier this month (Feb) are those cooling off by jumping from into the Indian Ocean from guided-missile cruiser USS Antietam.
With the ship anchored, Swim Calls are seen as a refreshing break from the job of keeping high-tech battleships running.
The activity often occurs in warm foreign waters, such as the Mediterranean, Arabian and South China seas, the Indian and Pacific oceans.
Suffice to say, there will be people tasked with shark watch, from the ship and rigid-hulled inflatable boats.
Swimmers are able to clamber back onto the ship via landing docks or by climbing cargo nets.
