M.I.A's long awaited debut 'Arular' is out 25th April.
Aged just 11, M.I.A. (aka Maya Arulpragasam) became a refugee of war. Like many others, her family were forced to flee Sri Lanka when the Sinhala-Tamil conflict began to grip the country in the mid-eighties. Left with no choice but to face up to the daunting reality of restarting their lives in a foreign land, they found themselves a million miles away from paradise isle and on a notorious housing estate in Mitcham.
Quickly adapting to her new surroundings, she has gone from those dark days to where she is today, on the verge of stardom. Already established as an artist of some note (she was once shortlisted for the Alternative Turner Prize, no less), her attentions have now turned to music.
Having sent out shockwaves with her singles ('Galang' and 'Sunshowers') and her mixtape collaboration with Diplo ('Piracy Funds Terrorism'), her debut album, 'Arular', is up next. The mongrel mix of hip-hop, ragga, dancehall, electro and pop alongside uncompromising, spitting lyrics are all there to hear - it's been a worthwhile wait.

A seven-year-old 'mini Monet' has taken the art world by storm - selling his latest collection of paintings for GBP 150,000 in just 30 minutes.
The sale of schoolboy Kieron Williamson's work attracted buyers and bids from all over the world, including New York and South Africa.
Some fans even went to the extreme of camping outside the gallery in the art prodigy's home town of Holt, Norfolk, where his work was to be exhibited.
The paintings in Kieron's latest collection, which is his third, featured local Norfolk landscapes and coastal scenes.
It also included views of City Temple in Holborn, Central London, and even a painting of Hong Kong.
Kieron comments: "I like landscapes as they've got the big Norfolk skies in them and not too many hills or mountains".
One of the biggest sellers at the sale was a 20in by 30in oil painting called 'Sunrise at Morston', which went for GBP 7,995.
Meanwhile, a 19in by 25in pastel called 'Marsh at Sunset' fetched GBP 6,750.
Even the cheapest art work sold for GBP 1,825.
Kieron paints up to six paintings a week and there currently around 700 people on a waiting list for an original.

'Mini Monet' Takes Art World By Storm
A seven-year-old 'mini Monet' has taken the art world by storm - selling his latest collection of paintings for GBP 150,000 in just 30 minutes.
The sale of schoolboy Kieron Williamson's work attracted buyers and bids from all over the world, including New York and South Africa.
Some fans even went to the extreme of camping outside the gallery in the art prodigy's home town of Holt, Norfolk, where his work was to be exhibited.
The paintings in Kieron's latest collection, which is his third, featured local Norfolk landscapes and coastal scenes.
It also included views of City Temple in Holborn, Central London, and even a painting of Hong Kong.
Kieron comments: "I like landscapes as they've got the big Norfolk skies in them and not too many hills or mountains".
One of the biggest sellers at the sale was a 20in by 30in oil painting called 'Sunrise at Morston', which went for GBP 7,995.
Meanwhile, a 19in by 25in pastel called 'Marsh at Sunset' fetched GBP 6,750.
Even the cheapest art work sold for GBP 1,825.
Kieron paints up to six paintings a week and there currently around 700 people on a waiting list for an original.
The youngster first started painting two years ago after he was inspired by boats in dock during a family holiday to Cornwall.
His work first came on the market last summer when 19 of his paintings were sold for GBP 14,000 in a sealed-bid auction.
At his second exhibition in November 2009 another 16 of his works were sold for GBP 17,000 in just 14 minutes.
Gallery owner Adrian Hill said: "Kieron has probably become one of the most collectable artists worldwide".
Kieron's parents plan to buy him a house with his earnings and invest the rest for him until he is 25.

Seven-year-old Zhang Zheng'en is a grade-two pupil at Kunminglu School in north China's Tianjin Municipality. Before he was 2-year-old, Zhang's parents began to teach him to learn the Chinese characters. Gradually, he could read by himself and the boundless range of books including Astronomy, Geography, animals and plants has broaden his eyes.
Little Zheng'en likes to ask "why". When he saw somebody fixing an automobile, he would ask about the principle of automobile; When he came across the electrician of the residential area, he would inquire about the principle of voltage. Most adults complained that he has too many questions; therefore, his mother suggested him to consult those questions in a Library because his questions were considerably professional.
Among various kinds of books in the library, electric books are Zhang Zheng'en's favorite. He tried to make some whimsically electric invention. Whenever he learned new electric knowledge, he would like to share with others.
Zhang Zheng'en likes to go to the Science and Technology Museum because there are numberless items to play with and boundless of questions to figure out. Sometimes, he voluntarily explain for the tourists enthusiastically. Although he has been to the Science and Technology Museum for many times, he still has new questions and gains new achievement.
At the age of five, his father took him to Heping Children's Palace of Tianjin. His wish to enter for an electricity training class was turned down because only beyond grade-two pupils are accepted. He was so disappointed though, Teacher Zhang from the electricity training class chatted with him and, to his surprise, he was qualified which was an exception. Within the last two years, he has finished the primary level, middle level and advanced level of the training class in the Children's Palace
