We moved to Tooting 11 years ago. To be honest I wasn’t very enthusiastic about the area.

We wanted to buy a place; we were first- time buyers without a massive budget and at the time it was just much cheaper.

We bought a terraced house in a terrible condition, which we have slowly renovated, and I grew to love Tooting.

Alexia Sloane at home with mother Isabelle, A 10-YEAR-OLD schoolgirl who is fluent in FOUR languages has become the youngest interpreter to work at the European Parliament - and she is BLIND.
Alexia Sloane lost her sight at the age of two after she was diagnosed with a brain tumour whilst on holiday in France.
But despite her disability the little girl has excelled at languages and at the age of 10 she is already fluent in English, French, Spanish and Mandarin - and is learning German.
Now she has fulfilled her dream of working as an interpreter after East of England MEP Robert Sturdy invited her to the European Parliament in Brussels.
"There is usually a minimum age requirement of 14 just to enter the European Parliament so for Alexia to interpret there at the age of 10 was amazing," said mum Isabelle.

Iraq Iraqi Interpreters Help US Troops
Iraqi interpreter assists US Forces in combined patrol with Iraqi Army in Dora district of Baghdad, Iraq, on Sunday, November 4, 2007.

Several thousands of Iraqi citizens work as interpreters for US Army and the American Government. Most of them are provided by companies like L-3 and Parsons Corporation, and work as civilian contractors attached to military units which rely heavily on their skills in communication with the local population, co-operation with Iraqi security forces and gathering intelligence.

Interpreters regularly conceal their identity by wearing face masks and using codenames, because they are targeted by both Sunni and Shia militias, who see them as traitors and spies. Their work is often kept secret from neighbors, friends and even family. No comprehensive records are kept of how many Iraqis have been killed while working for the American war effort. In the first half of 2007, United States had granted 69 locally employed Iraqis "special immigrant visa" status. State Department officials say they are working with Congress and the Homeland Security Department to accelerate the processing of visa issuing to Iraqis who are at risk due to their connection with Americans. **Poland Out** (FOTO: DUKAS/WORLDPICTURENEWS)
