Masiphumelele / Lake Michelle. Picturesque suburbs look out onto the glistening waters of Lake Michelle, 20km from Cape Town?s city centre. Separated by wetlands, a guard house and an electrified fence, the 38,000 inhabitants of the neighbouring tin shacks of Masiphumelele are a world away. There is no police station, only one small day clinic, and it?s estimated that up to 35% of the population is infected with HIV or TB

A photographer has captured a stark view of the urban economic segregation in South Africa.

Johnny Miller has used drone technology to take an aerial view of the divide in standards of living between the poor and the wealthy.

His work highlights how the manicured suburbs of the middle classes sit only several hundred metres away from the ramshackle shanty towns of the poorest members of society.

An example include a God's-eye view of the picturesque suburbs looking out onto the glistening waters of Lake Michelle, 20km from Cape Town?s city centre. Separated by wetlands, a guard house and an electrified fence, the 38,000 inhabitants of the neighbouring tin shacks of Masiphumelele are a world away.

Photographer Malte Brandenburg said:"Initially these buildings meant a vast improvement of life for the middle class in Berlin. They provided more space and were affordable, didn?t cost much in construction and were built quickly. However with time, these buildings were not really needed anymore by their initial inhabitants. Suddenly they turned into a burden for the city as the urban lifestyle of its citizens changed and efficient and cheap housing was not of real interest anymore for the masses."

A photographer has captured a series of charming photos of Berlin's post-war housing apartment blocks.

The pictures show perfectly symmetrical concrete apartment blocks, pictured against blue skies.

Copenhagen-based photographer Malte Brandenburg, 37, travelled back to his birth place (Berlin) to capture the photo series 'Stacked'.

Malte said: "I wanted to highlight the architectural structure of these buildings rather than their social context. I think by making them comparable you notice that they all have something in common, but that the architects still maintained their individual small little features.

"For me they are not ugly leftovers from past decades in a city?s skyline. I find they tell a story, which is still relevant today, namely the tension between engineering and the human element.

    Residents Flee Violent Ciudad Juarez
May 04, 2010 - Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico - With more than 2,600 violent deaths in 2009, and 655 as of April 12 of this year, Ciudad Juarez, Mexico continues to merit the label of the world's most violent city. As a result of the drug violence, gang extorsion schemes and official corruption, an exodus of considerable proportions is currently underway from the ravaged city. Those with the means to do so, move across the Rio Grande River to El Paso, Texas. But for the working class, poorer citizens of Juarez, their options are much more limited and are desperate. Recently, the state government has implemented a program of financial assistance to those who wish to return to their home towns in the state. The Campos Ordinola family is living in Juarez and has experienced the violence themselves, and decided to return to the small town of Tres Valles.
