What lies beneath: the hidden caves buried under Auckland back yards
Rich history to 200 caves - from housing a secret printing press to widow's shelter - as steps taken to protect the 'sacred' sites.
Aucklanders are familiar with the volcanic terrain of their city above ground, living side by side with 53 volcanoes. Yet many are unaware of the extraordinary landscape concealed beneath their feet. Formed by volcanic eruptions, lava caves and tunnels are rare globally, and the sprawling patchwork beneath Auckland is unique to New Zealand. The city sits on top of roughly 200 known caves with a new cave being discovered every month.
270224 Inside Sean Jacob at the entrance to his backyard lava cave in Mt Eden, Auckland. Sean bought the property in the 1990’s to protect the lava cave beneath it. Auckland's underground lava cave network - with geological and social history.
The caves have been used over the years as everything from Maori burial sites to mushroom farms, to housing a covert communist printing press.
They form an expansive network underneath the city, and now researchers are attempting to map them all, and in the process discovering a new cave roughly every month.

A Hansel and Gretel-inspired flock of robots designed to go house-hunting for future astronauts in Mars is being developed by researchers.
The robots would explore subsurface environments on other worlds.
The target would be dormant volcanic lava tubes and caves according to scientists at the University of Arizona, in the the USA.
One of the team, associate professor Wolfgang Fink said they would make perfect habitats for astronauts.
He explained:” You don't have to build a structure, you are shielded from harmful cosmic radiation, so all you need to do is make it pretty and cozy.”
Fink is lead author of study to develop a a communication network that would link space rovers, lake landers and even submersible vehicles to work together as a team, independently of human input.
This could help address one of US space agency NASA's challenges by helping overcome the limited ability of current technology to safely explore environments on comets, asteroids, moons and planetary bodies.
The researchers say they took inspiration for the plan from the classic Hansel and Gretel fairytale.
Fink explained: “Hansel and Gretel dropped breadcrumbs to make sure they'd find their way back.
”In our scenario, the 'breadcrumbs' are miniaturised sensors that piggyback on the rovers, which deploy the sensors as they traverse a cave or other subsurface environment.”
OPS:A hole in the surface of Mars reveals a cave below. Protected from the harsh surface of Mars, such pits are believed to be good candidates to contain Martian life, making them prime targets for possible future spacecraft, robots and astronauts.

‘He was actually cracking jokes’: a volunteer on the 54-hour Brecon Beacons cave rescue. Hundreds took part and descended into the 43-mile underground network to save injured caver George Linnane.
A huge operation has been launched to rescue an injured man who has been trapped for two days in one of the UK’s longest caves at least 300 metres from the entrance. Some of the 242 rescuers attempting to free the man, who is believed to have injured his back, were involved in the 2018 rescue of 12 boys and their football coach from flooded caves in northern Thailand, 17 days after they got trapped underground. The injured man fell while exploring the Ogof Ffynnon Ddu cave system in the Brecon Beacons in south Wales, near the hamlet of Penwyllt, and could not get himself out. Here a rescuers vehicle in the cave car park is observed.

The ancient temple is a protected Tibetan Buddhist site with over 70 caves hand carved into the cliff. Tourism in Gansu Province, the seventh largest administrative district in China, accounts for nearly half the province's annual revenue while remaining one of the poorest provinces in the country.
