A pair of earbuds that can record brain activity could diagnose long term degenerative brain conditions as well as seizures have been developed by scientists.
They can also be used for monitoring effort and stress during physical exercise for athletes.
All it takes is the addition of two flexible sensors screen-printed onto a stamp-like flexible surface attached to the buds.
The sensors communicate with the earbuds, which then wirelessly transmit data for further analysis to either a smartphone or laptop.
The data can be used for long-term health monitoring.
The sensors were developed by a multidisciplinary research team of engineers at the University of California San Diego.
The advantage is that they are a lot less cumbersome than state of the art devices currently used to sense the brain’s electrical activity and the body’s sweat secretions.
They can be used in the real world during exercise, the researchers showed.
OPS:The earbuds are secured with a silicon hook in order to be more stable in the ear.
