MORMONS EXPOSED: CONTROVERSIAL CALENDARS
A controversial pair of calendars promise to give us a revealing look at the Mormon faith.
'Hot Mormon Muffins: A Taste of Motherhood' and 'Men on a Mission' present what claim to be a sizzling selection of men and women from the religion known for its conservatism.
Twelve mothers said to be members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints appear in vintage pinup poses in Hot Mormon Muffins, the title explained by the appearance of a muffin recipe for each month.
Las Vegas-based Mormons Exposed say that the hunks that appear in Men on a Mission are "former Mormon missionaries who have dared to pose bare-chested".
Chad Hardy, the man behind the calendars, says the female version is designed as "a vehicle to create dialog and deliberately debunk the subservient stereotypes of women's roles with the Mormon church."
Hardy himself came from a sixth-generation Mormon family, lived in Utah for 8 years, and served a 2-year religious mission himself. He gave up his membership and diploma from the church-owned Brigham Young University following controversy over an earlier edition of Men on a Mission.
He explains: "For Mormons, the most holy calling next to missionary work is motherhood. But they're not all the subservient housewives that people think they are."
A portion of proceeds from the $15.95 Hot Mormon Muffins calendar will benefit breast cancer research.
Chad says: "All of our projects offer a deeper story than your typical skin-baring calendars one that we believe can reshape perceptions, heighten awareness and perhaps inspire a broader acceptance of diversity.
"This project has created a polar response from both sides of the spectrum, and has gotten people's attention."
