A sign put up by Shell oil to deter tribespeople in the Delta region from tearing up their (Shell's oil) pipelines. For many years controversial oil prospecting and extraction have left the local people furious at the loss of their forest to oil spillage, light pollution from flares and no finds coming back to the region.

    BRAZIL Climate Change
Trees' remains are shown in an Amazon burning area in Castelo de Sonhos, Altamira, Para, Brazil, on Monday, October 15, 2007. Global warming is caused by excess greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. In Brazil, these gases, like carbon dioxide (CO2), are released by deforestation and forest fires, which are responsible for 75 percent of Brazils' emissions. The country is the fourth largest climate polluter in the world. About one-fifth of the worlds' greenhouse gas emissions are caused by forest destruction.

Woodland in the Urho Kehkkosen National Park near Saariselka Northern Finland Climate change has already raised average temperatures by 0 7 oC over the last century Winters are getting both warmer and wetter and in Southern Finland winters are becoming increasingly snow free As permafrost melts across the Arctic huge quantities of carbon dioxide and methane could be released leading to even further warming Such iconic winter scenes could in a relatively short space of time become a thing of the past

Inuit summer huting camp at the mouth of the sepentine river near Shishmaref a tiny island between alaska and siberia in the ChBritainchi sea is home to around 600 inuits or eskimos. As hunter gatherers their carbon footprint is tiny and as such are least responsible for global warming. Yet they are suffering greatly as a result. Their problem is twofold as temperatures rise the sea ice that used to protect thier island home forming around late september is now not forming until late december. this leaves them vulnerable to autumn and early winter storms that are eroding their island and washing it into the sea. Already 10 houses have been washed into the sea and more have had to be moved back from the edge. They are looking at having to relocate their whole comunity to the mainland but the government is refusing to pay for the relocation. Secondly the animals that they rely on for food are moving further north as temperatures warm making them harder to find and hunt threatening their ancient culture and identity.

Small enough to be used legally on the pavement or inside a shop, the GBP 5,500 QTvan is so named because it caters to three peculiarly British obsessions: caravans; queuing and tea. The tiny caravan is ideally suited to queuing overnight for the sales or tickets for Wimbledon fortnight, and boasts tea-making facilities to make any long wait bearable.According to the Environmental Transport Association (ETA), the QTvan is ideal for the estimated 220,000 people who use a mobility scooter without breakdown cover, and who face the prospect of a very long wait should they suffer a mechanical fault or their battery runs flat. Spokesman for the ETA, Yannick Read, said: (FOTO:DUKAS/REX)

'Naughty Beach Fun' Wins Electron Microscope Competition
Naked bodies appear to frolic on a beach, a frog happily perches on a hill and a kangaroo bounds across the landscape.

These are some of the familiar - and bizarre - sights scientists have seen under the microscope.

These images were entries in the recent International Symposium on the Physical and Failure Analysis of Integrated Circuits in Singapore.

The annual photography competition sees eggheads showing off the fun side of their research in microelectronics technology.

The analysts work on 'failure analysis', the process of investigating why a particular electronic component fails to work.

The winning image, entitled People on the Beach by Lim Saw Sing at Infineon Technologies, depicts a polyimide surface after exposure to reactive ion etching and sputter coating. In reality, it looks uncannily like a saucy beach scene with dozens of cavorting couples.

Second prize was Wings by Foo Fang Jie at Advanced Micro Devices which sees fracture analysis of a silicon sample resembling a pair of wings. Third prize The Hope Terrace by Tan Lee Koon at Systems-on-Silicon Manufacturing Co. is a picture of wafer-edge chipping giving the effect of step-like spectacular landforms.

Other highlights included a 'Royal Elephant' on a silicon sample, a particle embedded in a metal layer resembling a tortoise in water and a 'Fist of Victory' highlighted by an image showing the nano fabrication capability of a FIB (Focused Ion Beam).
