Plans for a futuristic tram system have been unveiled — where integrated solar panels in the track replace overhead cables to power it.
The system is to be the major headline project for an eco-friendly corridor of homes and businesses in the city of Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
The panels are also expected to contribute , with other smart technologies towards generating more than 300 megawatts of clean, renewable energy for the scheme called the Dubai Green Spine.
It will form a green corridor running 64 km.
The output is planned to power around 130,000 homes.
By switching to solar power from fossil fuels, Dubai-based developer URB says there may be a carbon reduction of around 1,051,200 tonnes annually.
Sensors will monitor traffic and energy use, while native flora encircles the pedestrian paths and cycling tracks for natural cooling and clean air.
Residents will be able to jog around the green spaces and even grow their own food and plants in vertical farms along the highway.
