The best of both worlds: Opera North's Orpheus reimagined.
Monteverdi's opera has been reinvented for an orchestra of baroque, classical and Indian instruments, and rescored for a cast of Indian and western classical singers. How? And why? And where to start if you don't know your esraj from your elbow?

Four years ago, the Leeds-based Opera North and South Asian Arts came up with a bold plan to collaborate on an opera. Opening this week, Monteverdi's 1607 Orfeo - one of the earliest known operas, a work that revolutionised the way people sang and conveyed emotion - has been radically reimagined in an innovative new production that respects and lets shine both musical traditions.

A scene from Orpheus by Claudio Monteverdi and Jasdeep Singh Degun at the Opera North. Directed by Anna Himali Howard. Music Director Laurence Cummings.
