Jasper, garnet, sometimes sapphires: pocketfuls of treasure at Gemstone Beach
At Orepuki, on the remote south coast of New Zealand's South Island, a bed of riches colour the shoreline, bringing gem hunters from near and far.
Jasper, hydro-grossular garnet in pinks, greens and yellows, patterned fossilised worm-trails, spotted argillite, frosty white quartz, speckled granites, pink-flecked rhodonite and - in rare cases - the unmistakeable blue of sapphire, colour the low-tide line.
The gems likely started their lengthy journey to Gemstone Beach during the last ice age, roughly 16,000-18,000 years ago. As the landscape of Fiordland - the dramatic mountainous region of the lower South Island - altered and released its rocks.
Invercargill rock collector Marion Troon has been fossicking at Gemstone Beach since the mid-'90s. Here she shows a board presenting the variety of precious stones that she sourced from Gemstone Beach, Orepuki, Southland, New Zealand.

15th March 2024
Runs to 20th October 2024
Evening gown owned by Maud Messel (née Sambourne) 1900-05
Velvet dress with lace and sleeves and silk lining. This evening dress belonging to Marion & Linley’s daughter Maud who are up at Sambourne House . Maud too an early interest in fashion.
A display of rare, nationally significant outfits is at the heart of Out shopping: The dresses of Marion and Maud Sambourne (1880-1910), a major new exhibition (23 March – 20 October 2024) at Leighton House and Sambourne House which shines a spotlight on the intimate story of a middle-class mother and her affluent daughter at a moment in history that shaped the way fashion is consumed today.
Several of the outfits have never been publicly displayed before and others have not been seen for more than two decades. A number are rare surviving examples by leading – often female – designers of the era. All are being conserved especially for the exhibition.
Marion Sambourne was the wife of Victorian illustrator and Punch cartoonist Linley Sambourne. Their daughter, Maud, shared an artistic flair which she abandoned in pursuit of a prosperous marriage.
The exhibition includes more than 40 exhibits which marked important moments in both Marion and Maud’s lives, offering a detailed picture of their ‘mother and daughter’ relationship and how fashion informed their distinct personalities and the lives of women of the period. Alongside the 10 dresses, there are photographs, letters, drawings and receipts from the Sambourne archive.
