November 6, 2025, Fatullah, Bangladesh: Severe dust pollution adds to commuters' woes on the road at Fatullah, on the outskirts of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Dust pollution reaches an alarming stage in Dhaka, and many deaths, as well as several million cases of illness, occur every year due to the poor air quality. Its air quality usually turns unhealthy during winter and improves during the monsoon. With the advent of winter, the city's air quality starts deteriorating sharply due to the massive discharge of pollutant particles from construction works, rundown roads, brick kilns and other sources. Associate Professor of Chemistry at SUNY Fredonia, Mason studies micro plastic pollution across the Great Lakes. Micro plastics are introduced to the lakes through consumer products and poor waste management practices. Mason collects samples on the open waters of the lakes. In an informal survey of lake Erie shore at Wright Park Beach, Mason found large items like soda bottles, plastic bags and many plastic fragments.
