You Floated My Battleship! The Superships That Carry Superloads
When the weighty problem of transporting superloads around the world arises, a bulky breed of superships are ready to take up the challenge.

But rather than standard cargo containers, these vessels are capable of floating unimaginable loads including full oil rigs, multiple nuclear-powered submarines and, in one epic voyage, 18 barges from China to the Netherlands.

Currently, the Australian Navy are employing the services of Netherlands-based shipping company Dockwise's MV Blue Marlin, the largest cargo transport ship in the world.

The ship is transporting the first of two aircraft carrier hulls from Spain to Melbourne.

The Australian Landing Helicopter Dock (ALHD) Canberra is the first to commence the 12,000 nautical mile voyage around the Cape of Good Hope, estimated to be completed in 45 days after setting off on 20 August from Punta Langosteira, a new large port just south of La Coruna, northern Spain.

Spanish company Navantia has completed construction of the ships from the keel to the flight deck, and now the hulls are being transported for completion by BAE Systems Australia. The second hull, the ALHD Adelaide, will be transported in early 2014.

Blue Marlin is more than up to the task, being 712ft in length, larger than two football pitches, 138ft deep and able to carry 75,000 tonnes. That said, the ALHD Canberra is so large it overhangs the Blue Marlin deck by 180ft.

Blue Marlin's load capability also meant it was the ship of choice for the U.S. Navy when they had to transport the stricken destroyer USS Cole back to the United States after the warship was damaged by an Al-Qaeda suicide bomber attack while anchored in the port of Aden, Yemen.

The Blue Marlin is manned by a 24 crew and is powered by 17,000 horsep...

Burns Girl Receives Groundbreaking 'Cloned' Skin Grafts
A three-year-old South African girl who suffered burns to 80% of her body is recovering well after receiving artificially-grown 'cloned' skin grafts.

Pippie Kruger suffered serious whole body injuries after an accident at a braai (barbeque) at her home in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The youngster suffered 3rd degree burns to 80% of her body and has been in hospital since the incident on New Year's Eve.

This week (11/06/12) Pippie underwent a groundbreaking operation that saw 41 pieces of 'cloned' skin, which was flown in from America, grafted onto her back, face, chest, arms and legs.

As part of a highly experimental therapy, the skin was grown in a laboratory in Boston, Massachusetts using cells harvested from Pippie's body.

Armed forces to install missile launcher on top of Lexington Building Water Tower for Olympic Games anti-terrorism security, Bow, London, Britain - 29 Apr 2012
Missile batteries will be placed on the roof of upmarket residential flats in London as part of planned defences for the upcoming Olympics.

The high-velocity-missiles will be placed on the flat roof of a converted former factory near to the Olympic stadium that is now home to upmarket flats.

The missiles, which travel three times faster than the speed of sound, are part of a network of defences that would be used in the event of an airborne attack on the Olympic venue.

They will be tested this week as part of the military's six- day trial of its ground-based air defence systems ahead of the Games

The building where the missiles will be installed forms part of a Grade II-listed gated redevelopment of the former Bryant and May match factory.

'Posting Pegs' To Foil Dogs With A Taste For Postmen
Postmen are to be issued with a new gadget that aims to prevent their fingers being bitten by overeager dogs.

'Posting Pegs' are 8in long, flat plastic tweezers that allow postmen to keep their fingers well out of the way when posting a letter.

They simply insert the letter into the peg before pushing it through the letterbox.

A simple twist of the stick then allows the letter to be dropped, with the postman never having to expose their fingers to potential attack.

It is hoped that arming Britain's 70,000 postmen and women with the implements will reduce the 5,000 dog attacks they suffer each year.

The Royal Mail has now started offering the pegs to all of its staff and they are provided upon request.

However, according to Dave Joyce, national health and safety officer for the Communications Workers' Union (CWU), many Royal mail employees are not even aware of the existence of the pegs.

He is calling for a campaign to make postmen and women more aware of the devices, as well as calling on households with aggressive dogs to fit letterbox cages.

BRITAIN'S FIRST GAY SURROGATE FATHERS TEN YEARS ON

These exclusive pictures show Britain's first gay surrogate fathers on a day trip to Colchester Zoo with their three children, ten years after they made history.

Barrie and Tony Drewitt-Barlow, Britain's first gay fathers, sparked outrage when they used donated eggs and surrogate mothers in the USA to have their twins Aspen and Saffron (now nine-years-old) and Orlando (now five).

The pair from Danbury in Essex battled the American authorities to become the first gay couple to have both their names on their children's birth certificates - they celebrate the twins' tenth birthday in December this year.

To add to their joy, the couple are now expecting a second set of twins from a US donor and surrogate next year - they also know that they will be two boys.

The happy Drewitt-Barlow clan were at Essex's Colchester Zoo with their kids and new male nanny, Neil Kelly, as well as Barrie's young nephew Sam.

The couple met Kelly a few years ago when he was working as a cruise director on an Easycruise holiday they went on - he has been working for them for around 6 months.
