Woman Sets Record as Slowest Person To Swim The Channel
A woman has set a new world record for being the slowest person to ever swim the English Channel.
Jackie Cobell, 56, took 28 hours and 44 minutes to complete the Dover to Calais swim after repeatedly getting blown off course.
The detours meant that she swam an unbelievable 64 miles - three times longer than the straight 21 mile route.
As such Jackie comfortably beat the previous record for the longest solo Channel swim, which was set by Henry Sullivan who took 26 hours 50 minutes in 1923.
Jackie first started training for her epic swim five years ago when she was severely overweight and suffering from high blood pressure.
Having always loved to swim she turned to the sport in a bid to lose weight - swimming for 20 hiours each week in her local pool as well as in lakes and the sea.
However, while she got fitter the weight stubbornly refused to move and she eventually opted to undergo a gastric bypass last November.
Over the following six months she went on to lose eight stone as she continued to train for her cross Channel swim.
As part of her preparations she took part in two Channel relay swims and a solo swim of Lake Windermere.
After completing the Lake Windermere swim, which is half the length of the Channel crossing, in eight years Jackie thought swimming to Calais would take around 18 hours.
She set off on her mighty Channel swim at 6.40am on Saturday (24 July) and finally made it to the French shoreline at 11.24am the following day.
Despite the unexpected detours, caused by Jackie being blown off course, she completed the swim and managed to raise nearly GBP 2,000 for the Huntingdon's Disease Association.
And despite the enormous physical challenge Jackie, who is now recovering at home in Kent with husband Dave, is keen ...
