A dog and a duck have struck up an unlikely friendship - behind the bar of a pub called the Green Dragon. The unlikely story began when landlord Grant Adlam saved several eggs from a duck's nest which had been attacked by crows. The mother had abandoned the nest so Mr Adlam incubated the eggs in his airing cupboard, turning them every day. 'Two weeks after I saved the eggs, I heard a squeaking noise coming from the cupboard, and when I opened it Daffy was sitting on the floor' he said. Mr Adlam, landlord of the Green Dragon pub in Cambridge asked for advice from the Wildlife Society, which advised him on how to care for Daffy. Daffy, now eight weeks old, has been a huge hit with visitors to the pub as well as Mr Adlam's pet dog, west highland terrier Jock. Jock, who Mr Adlam describes as incredibly friendly and loving, has become very protective of the young bird. Mr Adlam said: 'They get on like a house on fire. Jock is there waiting for her first thing every morning when I go to let her out'. And it seems Jock's feelings are reciprocated - Jock and Daffy in the bar of the pub

A baby giraffe who has been featured on GMTV has now been joined by a playmate. The arrival of two Rothschild giraffe calves is being hailed as a unique success for the breeding programme at the park in Bedfordshire, never before in the Park's history have two calves been born within a single month. Dr Jake Veasey at the park said 'It is a great boost to the Park's breeding programme and also to the survival of a critically endangered sub-species of giraffe.' The first male giraffe calf was discovered by staff early on Monday 25th September morning, already up and about and suckling from first time mother, Hannah. He soon became a media star, featuring on GMTV at the tender age of 4 days old, when viewers chose a name for him '' Goliath'. Savannah gave birth to the second male calf on the 20th October. He is as yet unnamed, but his name will begin with the letter ''G' like all the animals born this year.

Eva Longoria shopping at the trendy store Intuition. After she left, we asked a sales girl what she bought. She told us a cute story. She said Eva noticed someone in LA with the store's new 'Market Bag' so she called up last week and ordered one with her initials on it. Maybe she will come back at the end of July and get a new one with EP as the initials as she becomes Eva Parker (Mrs. Tony Parker) in early July. The bag retails for $95.00

OUT OF THE DUST - LIFE IN AFGHANISTAN

A powerful collection of images of everyday life in Afghanistan will be displayed for the first time in the UK in a new exhibition this summer.

'Out of the Dust - Life in Afghanistan' features images by Dutch photographer Hans Stakelbeek. The exhibition runs from 30 July-31 August 2008 at PM Gallery in west London.

In 2007 Hans Stakelbeek was commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs to document the reconstruction of Afghanistan during the efforts to restore peace and stability to the country.

Stakelbeek made four trips last year, shooting in Kabul and Uruzgan, as well as other remote areas.

As the project developed, he also became interested in capturing the stories of the people he came to know, as well as the reconstruction efforts required by his official posting.

'Out of the Dust' presents a set of images that pays tribute to the determination of the Afghan people to survive and live as normally as possible through the upheaval - building homes, going to school and working and playing in testing and frightening times.

The collection gives a rare view of daily life in Afghanistan without a military slant and each photograph comes complete with Stakelbeek's own written commentary, which reveals the stories within.

The exhibition is an up-to-date presentation of current life and an opportunity to see how the country is changing, how the reconstruction is progressing and to witness the perseverance of ordinary people in an extraordinary situation.

The farmer who brought us Britain's biggest bullock has found another record breaker - measuring 6ft 3in tall.
Arthur Duckett, 78, reckons massive Field Marshall, his six-year-old Charolet bull, weighing in at 1,360 kilos will be crowned the nations biggest. Arthur, a farmer, from Burnham-on-sea, Somerset, immediately saw the bull's potential, and said it will put on 300 kilos in the next year. He bought the white bullock two years ago and decided to keep it as a pet when he realised it was a one-off.
Two years ago Arthur and his wife Helen broke records with their 6ft 5in bull Colonel, who weighed 3,500lbs. The Colonel and Field Marshall are kept in a 22-acre field on Arthur's farm, and is in good company as he shares the plot with a 5ft 6in tall Highland steer called The Captain. 717981f

It is census time in Sydney's Royal Botanic Gardens. But it is not humans who are being counted. It is the furry winged invaders that occupied the green sanctuary during the drought and have turned it into their inner-city squat. A year ago, said Tim Entwisle, the executive director of the Botanic Gardens Trust, it was thought the gardens were home to about 11,000 grey-headed flying foxes. Now, he suspects, there could be twice that many. "They are slowly trashing the place," he said. Branches have been breaking under their weight and their urine and droppings have been poisoning plants. "They are destroying the palm grove," said Dr Entwisle. "They are killing the trees. We have had 12 trees die and 45 are on the critical list. A couple on the critical list were planted in the 1820s."Although the new count, being undertaken by volunteers, will not be completed for several weeks, Dr Entwisle expects it will confirm that previous estimates of the flying fox population have been wildly underestimated. Among trees under threat is a flowering ash that was almost killed by the drought. In the 1990s, flying fox numbers were dramatically reduced by staff bashing metal lids, frightening the animals away. Now the gardens trust is seeking government permission to resume the evictions, possibly using mobile loud speakers on buggies to disturb them. Dr Entwisle said the evictions, if approved, would probably not begin until autumn next year, after the next breeding season. "The welfare of the flying foxes is important to us."

The army gave us emergency biscuits and water but we were not given any food for four days"
Flooding in Sunsari, Nepal - 04 Sep 2008
Around 60,000 villagers in Nepal have been displaced due to flooding caused by the Kosi river breaching its defences three weeks ago and changing its course. The conditions have also affected nearly five million people in neighbouring India. Both governments now face the task of feeding and housing the many refugees who are living in relief camps. It is thought that some people will be forced to stay in these camps for up to six months. Already disease is becoming a problem and officials have said that at least 14 people living in Nepalese aid camps have already died after becoming ill. Both India and Nepal accuse each other of being to blame for the failure of the flood walls that should have prevented the disaster.

FORMER PENTAGON CHIEF ROBERT MCNAMARA DIES

Former US defence secretary Robert McNamara has died at the age of 93.

He died in his sleep at his home in Washington DC after suffering failing health for some time.

McNamara held the position of defence secretary during the Vietnam War and the Cuban Missile Crisis, serving under presidents John F Kennedy and Lyndon B Johnson.

He was also an architect of the US policy of nuclear deterrence.

Before becoming Pentagon chief in 1961, McNamara was the president of Ford Motor Company, turning the company around in the post World War II era.

After leaving the Pentagon he went on became president of the World Bank.

When he left office he was the longest-serving US defence secretary.

He is most famously associated with his role as key architect of the Vietnam War from 1961 to 1968.

This left him the target on many anti-war critics and later, in his memoirs, he wrote of his regret over his role in the war.

Following his retirement from the World Bank in the early 80s he also championed the cause of nuclear disarmament.

World Pea Shooting Championships, Witcham, Cambridgeshire, Britain - 12 Jul 2009
    NOVICE WINS PEASHOOTING TITLE

A complete novice has won the annual World Peashooting Championships after entering for fun.

Jim Collins, 34, came top in the quirky contest in the picturesque village of Witcham in Cambridgeshire after several hours of fierce blowing.

The dad, from nearby Hadenham, Cambs, had a surprise victory after using a conventional peashooter to beat local Ian Asmeade who used a specially adapted laser-guided shooter.

"It was definitely beginner's luck" said Jim.

"It was the first time I had tried the sport and taken part in the competition.

"I was very surprised to win, but extremely happy with the result."

Competitors from as far away as the USA and New Zealand battled it out in the unusual competition.

The contest has been staged on the village green since 1971 when it was first started to raise funds for a community hall.

As part of the contest competitors have to hit a target, which is fashioned out of putty, from a distance of 12 yards.

The pea used is very important, ideally it must have a diameter of no more than 5.5mm, otherwise it tends to get stuck, and it should have a smooth regular shape.

Due to this the common garden pea is unsuitable and the top competitors use dried maple seeds.

David Beckham rallies troops and military dogs to support England's 2018 World Cup bid in Camp Bastion

David Beckham rallied British troops to support England's 2018 World Cup Bid at Camp Bastion, Afghanistan today (Sunday)

He joined 903 EAW (Expeditionary Air Wing), the team that manages Bastion airfield. RAF firefighters from 903 greeted him wearing Back the Bid 2018 scarves and waving a St.George's flag.

Only last week RAF firefighters were heavily involved in supporting their US counterparts fighting a massive fire at the neighbouring US base at Camp Leatherneck.

Sergeant Simon Marsh said: "We had 35 RAF firefighters and four RAF vehicles involved helping to fight the fire. It's a classic example of the British and the US working together."

He later distributed Back the Bid badges to the troops he met while touring the enormous camp in soaring temperatures.

Warrant Officer Steve Bowden said: "David's visit has helped us all get in the right frames of mind for the World Cup - he has really made us feel part of the excitement back home

"It's very easy and understandable that people here get detached from all the day to day events at home and we have thousands of England fans here."

"We'd all love England to be successful in their Bid for the World Cup in 2018 - to see the world's best tournament in our own country."

Beckham is the Vice President and Ambassador of the World Cup Bid 2018 and handed in England's official Bid Book to FIFA in Zurich last week.

Royal Wedding: The Locals With The Hottest Invite In Town
When Prince William and Kate Middleton walk down the aisle they will do so in the presence of a host of VIP guests.

Famous faces and dignitaries from royalty, politics and the world of entertainment will all sit shoulder to shoulder in Westminster Abbey for the nuptials on 29 April.

Alongside them will be a number of lesser known faces - that is unless you grew up in the village of Buckleberry in Berskhire.

In keeping with the idea of a 'people's wedding' a number of residents from Kate's home town have been invited to the grandest event of the year.

As such a butcher, a shopkeeper and his wife, a pub landlord and a postman will all share in Kate and William's big day.

Shopkeeper Chan Shingadia and his wife Hash are one of the lucky number to receive a gold-embossed wedding invitation.

The couple runs Peaches Stores, where Kate is a regular, in the village

Commenting on their invite, Chan said: "I can't express my feelings - complete shock, superb, brilliant".

Despite being delighted by the invite it has thrown up one problem - what to wear.

However, after checking with Kate's dad that it would be ok, Hash is now planning to don a sari on the big day.

Much to his amazement pub landlord John Haley, who runs the Old Boot Inn in Stanford Dingley, will also be attending the ceremony.

The 55-year-old has known the Middleton family for more than 14 years and Kate and William have enjoyed a drink at the pub a number of times over the past year.

While he is enjoying the festivities first hand his pub will be holding a special 'wedding day' party, complete with BBQ, live music and best hat competition.

Other locals invited to the wedding include butcher Martin Fidler, who has run Bladebone Butchers for nearly 30 years.

Small enough to be used legally on the pavement or inside a shop, the GBP 5,500 QTvan is so named because it caters to three peculiarly British obsessions: caravans; queuing and tea. The tiny caravan is ideally suited to queuing overnight for the sales or tickets for Wimbledon fortnight, and boasts tea-making facilities to make any long wait bearable.According to the Environmental Transport Association (ETA), the QTvan is ideal for the estimated 220,000 people who use a mobility scooter without breakdown cover, and who face the prospect of a very long wait should they suffer a mechanical fault or their battery runs flat. 'I did NOT have an affair with Jennifer Lopez,' insists the handsome model who cavorted with star in steamy video

It emerged today that Model William Levy is being sued for 'sexual battery of a minor'
A male model known as the 'Brad Pitt of Cuba' has denied having an affair with Jennifer Lopez.

William Levy, 30, made a shirtless appearance in the pop star's new video I'm Into You, which was filmed in Mexico in April.

The American Idol judge, 41, was shown cosying up to him in sensual beach scenes filmed at Turtle Beach.

Steamy video: William Levy starred in Jennifer Lopez's clip for I'm Into You which was filmed in Mexico in April

Levy separated from his wife of eight years, Elizabeth Gutierrez, a month after the shoot.

Today he dismissed reports he is dating the star, who announced her separation for Marc Anthony on Friday.

A spokesperson for Levy told TMZ: 'The only relationship there was or is, is a professional relationship. ThatÕs all thereÕs ever been.'

The telenovela actor raved about working with the singer after the video shoot.

'It was wonderful. I felt very comfortable. She is a very sincere and fun person,' he said at the time.

'The truth is I had a really great time,' he added. 'It was wonderful to see that someone so huge could be so down to earth, in addition to being really funny.'

    Meanwhile, it emerged today that
Levy is being sued for 'sexual battery of a minor.'

Court documents state that on July 19, 2010, Levy, 'with deception and trickery' lured an unnamed plaintiff, into coming back to the Hilton Hotel in Glendale, California and forcing her to perform a sex act on him.

However, Levy is claiming the encounter was consensual.

According to court documents filed by Levy, the plaintiff 'gave consent to any and all alleged acts' and that the alleged victim 'wilfully, fraudulently, and maliciously deceived [Levy] into believing that she

Book Explores The World of Charles Dickens
With the 200th anniversary of Charles Dickens' birth commemorated on 7th February, a new book delves deep into the characters and locations featured in his classic works.

The World of Charles Dickens by Stephen Browning sees the author embark on a fascinating literary adventure throughout Britain.

His journey is illuminated by over 200 photographs taken especially for the book of locations in London, Kent, Yorkshire, the Midlands, the South of England, the West Country and East Anglia.

They include well-known locations including what is thought to be the Old Curiosity Shop in London, Dickens beloved sea-facing Bleak House in Broadstairs and the writer's London home in Holborn.

There are also trips to Rochester, the setting for Great Expectations and The Pickwick Papers, and The Lizard in Cornwall where Dickens would enjoy inspiring walks.

The pictures were shot over the course of a year and represent a reflection of Stephen Browning's lifelong admiration for Dickens.

Dickens is perhaps best known for bringing to life areas of London and parts of the capital are still evocative of his characters and storylines.

Stephen explains: "It is hard to choose a favourite location but maybe the Strand, where he walked both as a boy and as a man up to his offices in Wellington Street. I always see him here striding purposely in his flamboyant waistcoats.

"He was very famous and people would often double back to get another look at him. Or around the Bank of England where Scrooge would prowl. Smithfield too is one of his favourite locations."

The Smithfield market area of London is featured in Great Expectations, Martin Chuzzlewit, Little Dorrit and as a route Oliver Twist and Bill Sikes take on their way to rob a house.
