Eleanor, 16, works among a memorial of shoes set out in the Main Street in Ennis, County Clare, in honour of the women who have had to travel to England for abortions. Although she cannot vote in tomorrow's referendum on repealing the 8th Amendment to the Irish constitution she got involved to increase the options women have. The Yes campaign was out in force in force across Ireland today as the Abortion referendum entered its last day of canvassing. Judging by the regular takers of Yes badges among young voters a Yes vote sems likely in the town of Ennis. However among older women in particular the reaction was less positive.

Ali lies in the basement of his family's house in Galzani. Although it has been completely destroyed by the bombs 23 people live in the room. Ali's father says: "We will rebuild our homes again. The most important thing is that we have been liberated from ISIS"

Life in Mosul, Iraq - Mar 2017
    *Full story: https://www.rexfeatures.com/nanolink/t87b
The Iraqi army announced the liberation of the entire East-Mosul on Jan. 18, three months after the beginning of the offensive. Iraq's armed forces launched the offensive to retake Mosul in October and are still fighting to retake western Mosul, on the other bank of the Tigris River. The fighting has seen thousands of Iraqs flee, with the country?s immigration minister Jassim Mohammed recently reporting that some 355,000 people have been displaced. Many end up at already overcrowded refugee camps such as Al-Alil to the south of Mosul. Others head to the shattered eastern side of the city. Here, while ISIS, who took over the city in June 2014, may have been driven out the scars and damage left in their wake is still painfully visible. As residents slowly return to their homes they face a large hard battle just to survive let alone rebuild and return to a semblance of normal life.

In Columbia the cocaine business has become less important than in past years. It is the land now, with its enormous riches hidden in the subsoil, and the consequent lucrative management of extraction, inflaming economic interest and violence.

The gold fever has returned, supported by the exchange rate of 1111 dollars per ounce, almost 32 euros per gram.

Photojournalist Erberto Zani spent time with workers toiling in a trecherous illegal mine in Carrizal.

Witnessing nightmare conditions in cramped and poorly ventilated spaces, up to 500m under the earth, he experienced the dread of rapidly rising waters when an old pump at surface level broke down and the tunnels began began to flood.

Peru now exports more illegally-produced gold than it does cocaine and Peru is one of the world's largest gold exporters.

Though there are many who profit from this gold rush, there is a population of women that are slaves to the process, known as the Daughters of Awichita.

Peruvian photographer Omar Lucas has captured a series of thought-provoking images of the women working in the gold mines.

The photos were taken in La Rinconada, a place that is five hours away from Lake Titicaca, where there is a population of about 70,000 people who live on the gold they extract from the edges of a snowy mountain.

What if You Could See Wi-Fi...
What If You Could See WiFi?

Although we use it often, we rarely think about how it works. Now, American artist Nickolay Lamm has worked with former NASA Astrobiologist M. Browning Vogel to produce these colourful depictions illustrating wifi waves.

One image featuring New York's Central Park shows an idealised wifi data transmitted over a band that is divided into different sub-channels, which are shown in red, yellow, green and other colours.

Another image featuring Washington D.C.s National Mall depicts Wifi waves travelling through space as rapid, data encoded pulses or waves. A 'freeze frame' of these pulses shows that the pulses are about 6 inches apart.

Nickolay explains: "Wifi routers or antenna can be attached to trees, buildings, lamp posts and other structures. A typical outdoor router can project its signal 300 feet or more from its location. Objects such as trees can obstruct the signal such that it has to be augmented by multiple wifi routers placed in different positions."

    That's tHEIR Boy
With Prince Harry busy charming Jamaica it's clear to see that he is a chip off the old block.

Harry's 'Diamond Jubilee tour' trip has seen him visiting Jamaica, Belize, the Bahamas and Brazil.

Along the way he has taken part in a host of activities, including racing against Usain Bolt, dancing and playing polo.

Throughout, Harry's striking resemblance to his mother and father - Princess Diana and Prince Charles - has been clear to see.

In fact, in many ways the young Prince appears to be following directly in their footsteps.

With the 200th anniversary of Charles Dickens' birth commemorated on 7th February, a new book delves deep into the characters and locations featured in his classic works.

The World of Charles Dickens by Stephen Browning sees the author embark on a fascinating literary adventure throughout Britain.

His journey is illuminated by over 200 photographs taken especially for the book of locations in London, Kent, Yorkshire, the Midlands, the South of England, the West Country and East Anglia.

They include well-known locations including what is thought to be the Old Curiosity Shop in London, Dickens beloved sea-facing Bleak House in Broadstairs and the writer's London home in Holborn.

There are also trips to Rochester, the setting for Great Expectations and The Pickwick Papers, and The Lizard in Cornwall where Dickens would enjoy inspiring walks.

The pictures were shot over the course of a year and represent a reflection of Stephen Browning's lifelong admiration for Dickens.

Dickens is perhaps best known for bringing to life areas of London and parts of the capital are still evocative of his characters and storylines.

Stephen explains: "It is hard to choose a favourite location but maybe the Strand, where he walked both as a boy and as a man up to his offices in Wellington Street. I always see him here striding purposely in his flamboyant waistcoats.

"He was very famous and people would often double back to get another look at him. Or around the Bank of England where Scrooge would prowl. Smithfield too is one of his favourite location...

A house sparrow photographed at Folly Wildlife Rescue Centre, Sussex, UK. House sparrows (Passer domesticus) used to be one of our commonest birds. However they are in a steep decline, so each one is precious. This one, although demanding will help increase the population. It constantly called for food, even though it had just been fed before this picture was taken.

An adorable project shows the baby birds of Britain in the first days of their lives.

Wildlife photographer Gavin Parsons has worked closely with UK rescue centres to capture chicks bought in for care.

He has spent the last three years photographing some of the baby birds bought into Folly Wildlife Rescue in Sussex and the RSPCA Wildlife Rescue Centre West Hatch in Somerset.

Each year hundreds of hatchlings are bought to rescue centres either after their nests have been disturbed or when they have been mistakenly picked up by well-meaning members of the public after they have fledged.

It is census time in Sydney's Royal Botanic Gardens. But it is not humans who are being counted. It is the furry winged invaders that occupied the green sanctuary during the drought and have turned it into their inner-city squat. A year ago, said Tim Entwisle, the executive director of the Botanic Gardens Trust, it was thought the gardens were home to about 11,000 grey-headed flying foxes. Now, he suspects, there could be twice that many. "They are slowly trashing the place," he said. Branches have been breaking under their weight and their urine and droppings have been poisoning plants. "They are destroying the palm grove," said Dr Entwisle. "They are killing the trees. We have had 12 trees die and 45 are on the critical list. A couple on the critical list were planted in the 1820s."Although the new count, being undertaken by volunteers, will not be completed for several weeks, Dr Entwisle expects it will confirm that previous estimates of the flying fox population have been wildly underestimated. Among trees under threat is a flowering ash that was almost killed by the drought. In the 1990s, flying fox numbers were dramatically reduced by staff bashing metal lids, frightening the animals away. Now the gardens trust is seeking government permission to resume the evictions, possibly using mobile loud speakers on buggies to disturb them. Dr Entwisle said the evictions, if approved, would probably not begin until autumn next year, after the next breeding season. "The welfare of the flying foxes is important to us."
