Mountain Hare (Lepus timidus) resting on snow in blizzard
Mountain hares in the Cairngorms National Park, Scotland - 30 Nov 2015
*Full story: http://www.rexfeatures.com/nanolink/rom4
With their white fur causing them to melt into the snowy background, as well as having a reputation for being elusive, successfully photographing mountain hares is never an easy job. However, wildlife photographer Mark Hamblin was up to the challenge when he headed to the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland in order to capture these shy creatures on camera. He ventured out on a clear and sunny day with several centimetres of snow lying on the ground and headed up the frozen track to the glen where he was greeted by an icy wind. Mark comments: "A few hundred metres further on I spotted a hare lying flat on the snow. It was clearly aware of me but I needed to get closer for a decent picture. Slowly moving forward I approached but the hare bolted and ran 500m or more out of sight.

Janus van Vliet im Jagdglück - Jäger mit Rollator erlegt ersten Hasen bei Beginn der Jadgsaison im niederländischen Hazerswoude

*** The first hare is hunted and shot. Hunter Janus van Vliet from the Dutch city Hazerswoude has shoot Wednesday 15-10-2014 -on the first day of the hare hunting season- traditionally (for 50 years now) a hare for his own meal. This time it went a bit more difficult than other years. Janus is recovering from a back injury and has tot move temporarily with a walker. Yet he managed to shoot a hare. This season, there are a remarkable number of hares in the Netherlands, thanks to the dry spring and good summer. Because hares in the winter months causing much feeding damage on the trees of the nurserymen around Hazerswoude, Van Vliet has often to go out this fall for hunting the bunnies***

Peek-A-Boo Hare
Peek-a-boo we can see you!
A brown hare appears to be playing a game of peek-a-boo as it soaks up the sunshine in a field in Hertfordshire.
The mischievous animal was photographed by nature photographer Tom Mason who had to employ some stealthy moves - not to mention a great deal of patience - to get the shots.
He comments: "After three hours crawling across a field I spotted two sets of ears prick up above the sprouting crops.
"A moment later two brown hares got up, chasing each other around before one bounded towards me and settled only a matter of feet away.
"Over the next hour he continued feeding and moving around me, sometimes within 4ft of my lens where it was too close to focus".
And after the creature had got used to the human interloper it soon revealed its playful side.
Tom adds: "At times he seemed to play peek-a-boo with me - lifting his paws up over his eyes, dropping them down to check I was still there, then lifting them up again. It was a magic evening spent with a gorgeous creature!"
