I wanted to take a photo of the tallest skyscraper in Europe, shrouded in morning fog. But for this shot I had to wait a long time for all the weather conditions to coincide. I regularly monitored the weather and looked into the city cameras to make sure that all shooting conditions were favourable for the intended shot, since I live very far from the shooting location. When everything coincided, early in the morning I called a taxi, arrived at the skyscraper, raised the drone as high as possible and took this picture."The 26 finalists for this year's Weather Photographer of the Year have been announced and the public are being invited to vote for their favourite. The Royal Meteorological Society (RMetS), which celebrates its 170th birthday this year, in association with AccuWeather, has put the shortlisted pictures on their website and people can visit photocrowd.com/wpotyvote to vote until September 25.The popular competition, which is now in its fifth year, has attracted entries from around the world.

The picture shows Mammatus Outbreak by Boris Jordan, aged 37, from Germany. It was taken in Leipzig. He said: 'This was by far the most spectacular mammatus display I've ever seen in my entire life. After a line of thunderstorms passed by and the sun disappeared behind the horizon, low-hanging mammatus clouds began to shine red and blue. At this moment I was just speechless, as the sky really looked like not from this planet. And as a nice bonus, a distant lightning made the composition perfect. Mammatus mostly appear in association with strong thunderstorms, if the sinking air, which contains high amount of liquid water or ice, is cooler than the surrounding air. Archaeologists working in Wiltshire have discovered a huge stone ritual arena thought to be 4,500 years old.

The stones were discovered under 3ft of earth at Durrington Walls near Amesbury and are currently being called "superhenge".
The stone monument, which is currently buried under a grass bank is just under two miles from Stonehenge.

Experts believe that the monument featured approximately 90 huge stones standing in a semi-circle facing towards the River Avon. The stones are thought to indicate a ritual site.

I had been following otter along a river in the northern Pantanal when I looked up and saw the transfixed eyes of a Jaguar staring out from the shade. It's one of the few times that I've looked an animal in the eye knowing that I was the prey.
Stay In The Boat: Tourists Get Close For Comfort At Cat Fight
These hair-raising pictures show tourists dicing with death as they strayed close to fighting big cats.

Seasoned wildlife photographer Paul Williams was overjoyed to finally find elusive jaguars in their natural habitat: the Brazilian Pantanal, the world's largest tropical wetland area.

But Paul, 34, who works for the BBC Natural History Unit, soon found his joy turn to terror as he watched foolhardy tour boats jostling to see which could get the closest.

He had planned to film the amazing scenes, but was quickly blocked by several tourist boats wanting to get the best view.

Paul explains: "I came across this group of young males on the corner of a river in the northern Pantanal - they appeared to be play-fighting. It wasn't long before a group of tourist boats also spotted the scene but I kept my distance knowing how dangerous jaguar are.

"The tourists went far too close for comfort. These cats have powerful legs and can jump several metres in one bound. In fact their name comes from the native american word yaguar meaning 'he who kills in one leap'.

Wet Owls Look Miserable In The Rain
Feeling miserable in the rainy weather? These owls know just how you feel.

Megan Lorenz wasn't unhappy when she had rain on her Florida holiday; as a wildlife photographer she knew it would afford her some great shots of burrowing owls reacting to the soggy conditions.

The results of Megan's shoot over several days in Cape Coral is a gallery of unhappy flappers.

She explains: "On a trip to Florida in April, I had a few days of heavy rain. Typically people that go on vacation don't want it to rain but photographers are a different breed!

"I knew that once it started raining the burrowing owls would dance around, spreading their wings and giving me some great photo opportunities.

"One evening in particular, the rain just kept on coming down and it was pelting hard enough to sting your skin. At that point one of the owls flew up to the roof and looked completely miserable.

"I did feel horrible for her but was thrilled to have the opportunity to capture the bedraggled look on camera!"

    What Herbert looked like before
Obsessed Superman Fan has Cosmetic Surgery to look like his Hero
A Superman fanatic has cosmetic surgery to look like his hero.

Herbert Chavez, 35, started having surgery in 1998 to transform into his heroic alter-ego, Superman.

Mr Chavez who is from the Philippines has had a chin augmentation to give him Superman's iconic cleft; Rhinoplasty to transform his Asian nose into one similar to actor Christopher Reeves; silicone injections into his lips to make them fuller and thigh implants to make his legs appear more muscular.

He has also had liposuction on his stomach and plans for more surgery on his abdomen to increase his similarity to the Man of Steel.

Mr Chavez said: "I have been a life-long fan of Superman after being given the costume when I was a child.

"In 1990 after I started working I could afford to buy the Superman figurines which I have been collecting for over 20 years."

Mr Chavez has a colossal collection of Superman memorabilia; some is still in the original packaging in order to maintain its collector's value.

In his home in Calamba City, south of the capital, Manila his house is filled to the brim with life-size statues, action figures, clothing, comics and posters.

He is also a celebrity in his hometown and his full-time profession is a 'pageant trainer', after winning the pageant: 'Mr Hero'.

Mr Chavez has appeared on a video report on the Philippines' Bandila news where a psychiatrist explained that Mr Chavez could be suffering from body dysmorphic disorder, meaning that he is obsessed with making cosmetic changes to his body.

Herbert has always worked in the comic book industry; one of his jobs was selling comic book hero's costumes. Superman has become part of his life and he is determined to carry on with cosmetic procedures to look even more l...

It wasn't Asha the koala's lucky day when he was struck by not one, but TWO cars.

The 3-year-old male had been trying to cross a busy Brisbane road when he was hit by one car, then another travelling in the opposite direction.

Luckily he was rushed to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital for treatment.

Asha, as he has been dubbed by zoo staff, was found to have suffered a fractured jaw, trauma to the gums and tongue, fractured ribs and a fractured toe.

Following an operation to insert a plate into his jaw, the plucky marsupial is steadily recuperating.

Baby blackbirds are fed by hand at the Secret World Animal Rescue, Somerset, Britain - 15 May 2011
They haven't had the easiest of starts in life but things are now looking up for these hungry baby blackbirds. The tiny youngsters found their way to the Secret World Animal Rescue centre in Somerset after their nest was destroyed, possibly by a cat or bird of prey. It has now fallen to staff at the centre to feed the demanding brood every hour on the hour. The clamouring youngsters, who have no interest in politely taking turns, are hand fed tiny meal worms carefully clasped in tweezers. The now thriving foursome will be released back into the wild after they are fully fledged. And they are not the only mouths staff at the centre have to feed. In recent weeks they have been inundated with around 200 baby tawny owlets, blackbirds, starlings, robins, dunnocks and other baby birds that had fallen out of their nests or become separated from their parents. The feathered youngsters are all feed using tweezers or the end of a paintbrush every one or two hours from 8am until 10pm.

Abandoned baby spider monkey cared for by keepers at Melbourne Zoo, Australia - 07 Mar 2011
Keepers at Melbourne Zoo are working around the clock to care for a tiny baby Spider Monkey. Little Estela, which means 'star' in Spanish, was abandoned by her mother Sunshine after being born on 17 January. A traumatic birth meant that Sunshine rejected her baby and keepers had to step in to ensure Estela's survival. According to primate supervisor Jess McKelson the last few weeks have been very tense for everyone in the primate department team. She comments: "We're taking turns to stay overnight with Estela to monitor her condition and provide the overnight feeds. "Keeping Estela alive has been a big challenge, and she has had ups and downs over this time, with several infections that have been a real threat to her survival. "Our veterinary department has been right there for us, ensuring that Estela has had the best possible chance of surviving". Full story: http://www.rexfeatures.com/nanolink/9djs
