April 13, 1971, California, USA: Manson family member Susan Atkins, with hair short, being taken to a hearing with Charles Manson. Charles Manson (born 1934) is an American criminal who led in the late 1960s what became known as the Manson Family, a California quasi-commune. He was found guilty of conspiracy to commit the Tate / LaBianca murders carried out in the summer of 1969 by members of the group at his instruction. The murders were gruesome and shocked the Hollywood community as pregnant actress Sharon Tate, wife of director Roman Polanski, was brutally killed. The sentence was automatically commuted to life imprisonment when a decision by the Supreme Court of California temporarily eliminated the state's death penalty.
