Ant trapped in a drop of water, Noosaville, Queensland, Australia - 26 Jul 2009

Water Way To Go
Trapped in a tiny perfect sphere of water, this unlucky ant is unable to escape.
A sudden downpour gave it no time to take cover and photographer Adam Gormley was there to snap the extraordinary image.
Adam, 34, had been using specialist close-up camera gear to snap spiders in his neighbour's garden.
He said: "I wasn't having much luck because of a short but heavy shower of rain.
"So I decided to photograph the little water drops sitting on the leaves of the plants."
Adam, from Noosaville, Queensland, Australia, had no idea there was an ant in one of the three millimetre droplets until he viewed the images later.
He added: "I thought it was some dirt inside the drop, and it was not my main focus, I liked the way the drop was sitting on the aloe-vera leaf, with the tiny hairs.
"When I uploaded the shot to my PC, I viewed it large, and I think I shouted out loud in excitement when I realised what I'd captured by accident!"
Adam believes the ant is likely to be a Coastal Brown species.
He said: "He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. The raindrop must have landed right on him. He couldn't have survived."

Disaster zone drone to hear the sounds of trapped survivors calling for help

A drone with sensitive hearing is being developed to help listen out for disaster zone survivors and their cries for help.
When a natural disaster such as an earthquake occurs, every minute counts.
Drones are often used to assist the search for survivors as they can provide an initial overview of difficult-to-reach areas and help to detect victims — provided they are visible.
Drones equipped with microphone arrays will be able to precisely locate cries for help and other acoustic signals from victims from the air and supply information about their location to the rescue teams.
This significantly increases the chances of a rapid rescue for victims who cannot be spotted by camera.
Researchers at Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute for Communication, Information Processing and Ergonomics FKIE are developing a system they have named LUCY.
The letters stand for Listening system Using a Crow’s nest arraY developed by scientist Macarena Varela in collaboration with colleagues and research group leader Dr. Marc Oispuu .
LUCY is an array of microphones — known as a crow’s nest array — which is mounted on drones in order to determine the direction from which noises such as cries for help, clapping or knocking signals are coming.
The tiny, robust mics are inexpensive and normally used in applications such as smartphones.
OPS:The array of microphones — known as a crow’s nest array — is mounted on a drone. It allows noises such as cries for help and knock-ing to be detected from the air and their direction to be determined.

‘He was actually cracking jokes’: a volunteer on the 54-hour Brecon Beacons cave rescue. Hundreds took part and descended into the 43-mile underground network to save injured caver George Linnane.
A huge operation has been launched to rescue an injured man who has been trapped for two days in one of the UK’s longest caves at least 300 metres from the entrance. Some of the 242 rescuers attempting to free the man, who is believed to have injured his back, were involved in the 2018 rescue of 12 boys and their football coach from flooded caves in northern Thailand, 17 days after they got trapped underground. The injured man fell while exploring the Ogof Ffynnon Ddu cave system in the Brecon Beacons in south Wales, near the hamlet of Penwyllt, and could not get himself out. Here a rescuers vehicle in the cave car park is observed.
