  • 'It's about living on what you have': Four shepherds seek sustainable life in Spain

'It's about living on what you have': Four shepherds seek sustainable life in Spain
The four inhabitants of Morillo de Sampietro, an abandoned village in the Pyrenees, live a simple life.

The tiny hamlet of Morillo de Sampietro stands high above a steep, wooded valley in the Spanish Pyrenees. Below is the glint of the Rio Yesa, beyond are the snow-capped peaks of Monte Perdido.

In 1860 Morillo had 76 inhabitants; by 1995 only two remained. Now there are four.

Jesus Huertas and Aina Solana, both of whom turned their back on city life to train as shepherds, live rent-free in return for saving one of the hamlet’s houses from ruin.

A few months ago they joined Morillo's only other inhabitants, Agustín Sesé, 52, the third generation of shepherds in his family, and his partner, Sara Rosado, 42, a fine arts graduate from Gijon in northern Spain, who have lived in the abandoned village since 2014.

Aina Solana, 26, says she feels like the guardian of the land, which is close to where her grandparents came from.

Sheep and shepherds make their way along a narrow mountain path
Sheep are herded from their alpine summer grazing grounds down to Belalp, Switzerland - 31 Aug 2014
Sheep are seen navigating a narrow mountain path as part of an unusual tourist attraction in the Swiss Alps. The animals have to traverse the perilous path as they are moved from their remote summer grazing high above the Aletsch glacier in Switzerland. The 700 animals have been enjoying the lush grazing at an altitude of 1800 meters for the past three months. The herd is collected every year during the last weekend in August and is driven over the mountain and down into the village of Belalp as part of an eight hour trek. When they arrive the sheep are herded into a large dry stone wall corral that is surrounded by many smaller pens into which the animals are then separated by their owners. As part of this Shepherd's Weekend festival or Schäferwochenende the four most beautiful sheep are presented with a crown of flowers. And the event has become something of a tourist attraction with people flocking to the area to watch the arrival of the herd.

    Life In Iran
Think of Iran and certain words may spring to mind: 'secretive', 'oppressive', 'evil'.

However, beyond the headlines and the politics, dig a little deeper and a very different Iran emerges.

It is a country where a large proportion of the population is under 35, partly thanks to a call by Ayatollah Khomeini to create 'armies for Islam'.

Ironically, the country's youth is now considered to be one of the biggest dangers, with many deeply unhappy with the current regime.

And, rather than despise America and the West, this group of post-revolution young adults do not prescribe to the anti-American propaganda that is often spouted.

As its President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad can often be seen as the 'face' of Iran and his hardline views considered to be the feelings of the majority.

Meanwhile, George W Bush's 2002 comments that Iran was part of an "axis of evil" has further coloured outside views of the country.

In reality Iran is a lot friendlier - and a lot more complicated - a country than you might first have thought.
