CARLA BRUNI MAKES UK TV DEBUT ON JOOLS HOLLAND

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy made her debut on British television last night by performing live on the Jools Holland show.

The supermodel-turned-singer, who married French President Nicolas Sarkozy in February, appeared on the BBC's 'Later with Jools Holland' alongside Metallica and Kings of Leon.

Performing a song from her new album she decided not to play it safe and sang 'Tu es ma came', a love song that has provoked controversy because of its references to cocaine.

Commenting on the choice she said that the song was "about a love addition... being addicted to someone in a toxic way".

Later when interviewed by Holland she admitted that she often wakes her husband up with her playing.

"I disturb him with it in the middle of the night," she said. "It's a very different world for him but he's very kind and listens to all my doubts."

Asked about the French leader's view of her music, she diplomatically commented: "He's not really a critic or a fan but he's involved in my music because I play all night long".

When questioned about what it was like mixing her roles as a singer-songwriter and president's wife, the 40-year-old said that she didn't really mix the two. Adding, "I separate them. I play my music and then I go with my husband when he needs me."

An extended recorded version of the show was also filmed to be broadcast on BBC Two on Friday.

During the recorded show, Bruni also performed 'L'Amoureuse', or 'The Woman in Love', and accompanied Holland on a version of US blues singer Bessie Smith's son 'Nobody knows You When You're Down and Out'

However, the biggest cheer on the night was reserved for Metallica who are currently number one in the UK album charts.

Metallica performed tracks from their new number one album Death Magnetic, before closing the show with 1991 hit 'Enter Sandman'. Other acts on the bill were UK rapper Sway, New Jersey singer Nicole Atkins and British pop newcomer VV Brown.
