New Cross house fire protest
2nd March 1981: Grieving protesters march from New Cross to the House of Commons after 13 black people were killed in the New Year fire at Deptford, south London. The fire aroused anger within the local community with allegations of a police cover-up of a racial attack.
The New Cross house fire was a fire that occurred during a party at a house in New Cross, south-east London, in the early hours of Sunday, 18 January 1981. The blaze killed thirteen young black people aged between 14 and 22, and one survivor committed suicide two years later. ... the New Cross Fire 30 Years On" was held at the Albany Theatre in Deptford.

A primary school teacher who received death threats after being falsely accused on Twitter of daubing racist graffiti on the wall of a London bar today said his life had been ¿ripped apart¿. Thomas Turnham was left fearing for his life after being wrongly linked to a racial insult spray-painted on to a jazz bar near his south London home. Staff at the bar contacted police after spotting the words ¿No n*****s¿ daubed on a wall near its forecourt. News of the shocking incident spread quickly on social media, with some users falsely naming Mr Turnham, a teacher at Dulwich Hamlet Junior School, as the racist vandal.

A primary school teacher who received death threats after being falsely accused on Twitter of daubing racist graffiti on the wall of a London bar today said his life had been ¿ripped apart¿.
Thomas Turnham was left fearing for his life after being wrongly linked to a racial insult spray-painted on to a jazz bar near his south London home. Staff at the bar contacted police after spotting the words ¿No n*****s¿ daubed on a wall near its forecourt.
News of the shocking incident spread quickly on social media, with some users falsely naming Mr Turnham, a teacher at Dulwich Hamlet Junior School, as the racist vandal.
Mr Turnham first realised he was being targeted when he received a tweet accusing him of being responsible for the graffiti attack on Dee Dee¿s bar in Herne Hill. That was followed by an avalanche of abusive tweets from around the globe.

Paul Canoville, Chelsea's first black player is using his experiences of battling racism, a drugs addiction and cancer to mentor disadvantaged young Londoners. Paul Canoville, a winger at Stamford Bridge between 1981 and 1986, has been recruited as an ambassador for the Guy Mascolo Football Charity, which helps young people in deprived areas of the capital. Mr Canoville suffered sustained racist abuse during his playing career, much of it from ChelseaÕs own fans. He retired aged 25 with a dislocated right knee and became addicted to drugs, from which he has been free for more than a decade. The 53-year-old, who has also had three bouts of cancer, said: ÒI share my story, not just from football, but from childhood, how difficult it was and the importance of education to get where they want to go.Ó
