A fleet of commercial fishing boats is seen moored at a fishing harbor in Soma, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan on December 27, 2019. The coastal town was hit by the tsunami after the Great Tohoku earthquake on March 11, 2011. Japanese authority on Friday, December 27, 2019, changed a plan for the cleanup of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant, further delaying the removal of over 4,700 spent fuel rod units that remain in cooling pools since the 2011 disaster. Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) has been unable to release the 1.2 million tons of treated but still radioactive waste water currently stored in nearly 1,000 tanks at the plant, fearing public repercussions and the impact on the area’s struggling fishing and agriculture industry. The amount of treated waste water is growing by 170 tons daily due to the continuous need to cool the melted fuel inside the reactors. (Photo by Yichuan Cao/Sipa USA) *** Local Caption *** 28558499
