On October 7, 2023, Yagil (then 12) and his brother Or (then 16), were kidnapped by Hamas from their mother's home in Kibbutz Nir Oz, while being alone. Their father Yair (Yaya) Yaakov (then 59) was shot by Hamas terrorists and kidnapped, severely wounded, from his house along with his partner, Merav Tal (then 53). Yagil and Or, who were held separately in Gaza, were freed on November 27th, after spending 52 days in Hamas captivity, following a temporary cease-fire agreement. Merav Tal, their father’s partner, was freed the day after. On 15 February Kibbutz Nir Oz announced with a broken heart that Yair ‘Ya-Ya’ was murdered by Hamas terrorists and his body was still held by Hamas in Gaza.
