Amazing NASA photographs of Volcanos
When one of the most active volcanoes in the world erupted earlier this month, a NASA satellite was able to capture the stunning spectacle.
The aerial shots of Japan's Sakura-jima volcano taken on 18 August showed possibly the largest eruption ever from the Showa Crater, blasting over 100,000 tonnes of ash five-kilometres into the air.
Thanks to the advanced the work of NASA's Earth Observatory an extensive archive of satellite photos of natural disasters, including volcanoes and earthquakes, have been captured.
This gallery shows some of the most impressive volcanic activity recorded by the U.S. Government organisation, which is the principal source of satellite imagery and other scientific information pertaining to the climate and the environment.
Although Japan's Sakura-jima volcano is one of the most active in the world, it rarely makes headlines. One or two small explosions typically occur every few days, with effects no greater than a light dusting of ash on the surrounding cities.
On August 18, 2013, a large eruption sent ash 20,000 feet (6,000 metres) above Kagoshima Bay, breaking the established pattern. It was possibly the largest eruption ever from the Showa Crater, which formed in 1946.

The sculpture, which took three sculptors over two months to design, was created to mark launch of UKTV's new TV channel 'Drama', which will be showing the original BBC Pride And Prejudice series. The lake scene from the series has previously been voted one of the most memorable British TV drama moments of all time.

Trick Or Treat! Two Cubs Born To Lucifer The Lion
Lucifer the lion received a sweet deal following the birth of his two cubs this Halloween.
The ZSL London Zoo's lion had his very own treat with the birth of two critically endangered Asian Lion cubs.
The seven-week-old cubs nicknamed Pumpkin and Spook are the second pair to be born to the Zoo's love cats Abi, 12, and her toy-boy Lucifer, 8, in two years.
For the first time ever the birth was captured on camera by excited keepers.
The little devils are slowly being introduced to their 28-stone father, Lucifer, who got his fiendish name because he bares international zoo identity number 666.
With around 350 Asian lions remaining in the wild and just 90 living in captivity, the cubs are a welcome addition to ZSL London Zoo, which is part of the European Breeding Programme for Asian lions.
Developing their own personalities, Pumpkin and Spook are already play-fighting with each other.
Zookeeper Tony Cholerton says: "We're thrilled about the arrival of Lucifer's cubs. They're full of energy and are proving a real hit with their doting mum.
"It's lovely to see that Abi is making such a good mother and we're expecting that Lucifer will be a roaring success as a second-time dad."
The as-yet unsexed cubs are currently residing with mum, Abi in their lion den and visitors can see them intermittently throughout the day depending on whether mum wants her privacy.
The youngsters are expected to make their first public appearance in their outside paddock in November - just in time for their first Christmas at ZSL London Zoo.

Prince William has become the latest member of the royal family, along with his father and the Duke of Edinburgh, to learn to fly with the Royal Air Force. Along with 25 other RAF cadets he graduated today (11 April) and was presented with his 'wings' by his father at a graduation ceremony at RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire. His graduation comes a day after the RAF celebrated its 90th anniversary at a dinner that was attended by the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall and William, along with RAF personnel of all ranks. After the ceremony, Prince Charles and his wife joined RAF graduates and their families at a reception before staying for lunch. In a move guaranteed to fuel speculation about their relationship, William's girlfriend Kate Middleton was also a guest. The Prince - an officer in the Household Cavalry regiment - has been following a shortened 12 week course that is designed to make him a competent flier but not an operational one. He is now shortly due to serve on attachment to the Royal Navy
