Some of the 13 puppies in Beau's supersize litter. A Labrador has given birth to 13 "absolutely gorgeous" puppies - which could be one of the breed’s largest ever litters. See NATIONAL story NNlab. A lovely Labrador delighted her family by giving birth to a whopping 13 puppies - one of the largest ever litters.Crufts champion descendant Beau had an ultrasound five weeks into her pregnancy with vets expecting just five or six puppies - not the baker's dozen they ended up with. Her owners had no idea the brood would reach double figures, just two shy of what is thought to be the record set by a black Labrador which gave birth to 15 puppies in 2014.The puppies started "flying out" when the first-time mum went into early labour last month after creeping under her owner's sheets. Dog breeder Leah Barrett delivered the litter with her sister Alice, as astonished dad Nick phoned his pals. The 32-year-old, of Allhallows, Kent, said: “The vet told us it would take about an hour for each puppy to be born. "We thought there could be up to eight, so roughly calculated an eight hour labour. But after seven were born in just forty minutes, we were all absolutely gobsmacked. They were just flying out.”Leah, who’s agoraphobia keeps her stuck at home, added: “My dad was so shocked he called his friends. “He told them, ‘oh my god, there’s nine, now there’s ten,’ and so on until the 13th arrived.“He was the one supposed to be helping me, but he was just too excited.”The birth was not without drama as one of the puppies became trapped in the birth canal by Beau’s placenta which had come loose.Leah, who did her homework before the delivery, said: “She was there for 40 minutes. By the time we got her out she wasn’t breathing or moving. “We were all panicking, we thought we had lost her.“It took about ten to 15 minutes to get her breathing.“I used suction equipment to suck all the fluid out of her lungs.”“It’s a good jo *** Local Caption *** 30357221

A spokesperson for the Spanish zoo said: "The wonderful surprise happened when Malin's carers noticed two placentas and saw that she was carrying two babies, each with their own umbilical cord."There was a mixture of both nervousness and joy because it is really unusual and requires great skill and care for the mother who must attend to the two newborn babies."Since the "double birth" everything is going smoothly and the two babies are stable - although it is still very important to monitor their development during this delicate time."We found that the two little ones are breastfeeding and that their mother has milk in both breasts."Finding two placentas is proof that they are twins even though we can differentiate them clearly by the colour of their ears - one of them has dark and the other has light -but we still haven't determined the sex."Malin is an experienced mother at the zoo in Spain and staff were not worried about her looming due date, who kept a close eye on her and added bedding to her indoor quarters. But on February 14, they were surprised to fin *** Lo

See NTI story NTIKITTENS; Kittens rescued after builders heard their cries from walls and under floorboards Three tiny kittens are being cared for by Blue Cross pet charity after they were discovered under floorboards and in the wall of a restaurant that was being demolished in Reading. George Harman and his team discovered the kittens as they were working on the former restaurant in Cane End. The builders were carrying out end of day checks on the derelict building which they were set to demolish when they heard tiny cries coming from inside. The team set about finding where the noises were coming from and on looking down a hole in the floorboards in the building found a tiny black kitten crying for its mother. When the cries continued the team set about carefully cutting and removing floorboards and half an hour later came across a second kitten some 10 metres away from its sibling. George Harman, Project Manager at Bellwood Homes, said: “The third kitten was THE challenge. We had heard more cries in the room but then there was silence. When it started crying again we managed to trace the noise to a bay window. We removed more and more flooring but we still couldn’t see a kitten anywhere. We could still hear the cries and then we realised they were coming from inside the wall. “We started to remove each block by hand, gently tapping the blocks with a hammer trying to loosen them without causing any disruption or discomfort to the kitten. We removed 10 concrete blocks in total to find that a third kitten had somehow got into the cavity of the building.” The whole rescue effort took the team around three hours before all the kittens were safely removed. *** Local Caption *** / action press
