Victims of Whitey Bulger
James "Whitey" Bulger, 81, ruthless Boston crime boss who spent 16 years on the lam and twelve years on the FBI Ten Most Wanted list, replacing Osama Bin laden at the top, was captured June 22, 2011 in Santa Monica. He arrived in Boston June 24 to answer charges he committed 19 murders. His girlfriend, Catherine Greig was arrested with him. Bulger, the former boss of the Winter Hill Gang, Boston's Irish mob, had been an FBI informant for decades, feeding information on the rival New England Mafia. He fled after a retired FBI agent told him he was about to be indicted. The character played by Jack Nicholson in Martin Scorsese's The Departed is inspired by Bulger. Richard Castucci was a Revere hustler who made a fatal mistake, he became an informant for the FBI. When the Winter Hill Gang's FBI agents informed their underworld paymasters of this development, the hoods lured the gambler/ club owner to Somerville, where he was shot in the head by Johnny Martorano.
